I-CARE is an acronym for Integrity, Community/Courage, Altruism,Respect/Responsibility, and Excellence. Each of these serves as a theme for the I-CARE classes for a period of time during the school year.

Statement of Purpose

The ultimate goal of the ICARE program at Monarch K-8 is to create a more personal environment in the school and give direction to students in achieving appropriate educational, career, and personal-social goals. We hope to realize this goal by meeting twice weekly on block days for 25-30 minutes to share in a variety of activities. Each ICARE class consists of apporoximately 15 students.

Discussion among students is an integral component of the ICARE program. This discussion will allow students to learn more about and practice positive communication among their peers. Discussions and activities are directed at the development of a better understanding of self, community, and the world through the use of themes that represent the ideal values of Monarch K-8.

ICARE Activities will/may include: monthly administrative open forum (town meeting format), read & respond, Socratic seminars, intramural participation, DEAR Time, locker clean out & organization, flex days, time for administrivia (report cards, student council voting, etc.), game days, guest speakers, grouping/mentoring between grade levels, etc.

ICARE Norms

o No grades will be given in ICARE.
o Students are encouraged to use their ICARE teacher as a resource.
o ICARE teachers will be included in communication involving the ICARE students. . . behavior & grade issues, etc.
o What is said in ICARE discussion stays in ICARE discussions involving other students.
o Active listening and participation is a standard expectation during each ICARE.
o ICARE is NOT a study hall.
o In order to demonstrate the value of literacy and community, all ICARE classes will read the same piece of writing and respond accordingly once a month.
o While provided with a variety of suggested activities, ICARE teachers are encouraged to use their professional judgment to alter plans as needed to meet the needs of their specific ICARE class.
