Language Arts:
Sixth Grade Language Arts builds on and enhances skills learned in elementary
school. We stress both creative and expository writing and continue work in
spelling and grammar use. Students become active participants in the assessment
of their own writing using the 6+1 Traits. Teachers clearly communicate with
students and parents about assignments and class expectations through the weekly
"Journey Sheet" which students receive each Monday. Weekly assignments
include "showing writings", writers notebook activities, and
work on long-term writing projects. These projects include but are not limited
to the following: "The Book of Me," Harris Burdick Mysteries, Poetry,
Voyage of the MIMI II, Weighty Word Stories, The Invention Convention, and Research/
Creating Power Point Presentations.
Reading:
At Monarch K-8, the sixth grade reading program fosters the love of reading
and the creation of life-long readers. Through full class books, literature
circles, and independent novels, students practice reading strategies and discuss
elements of literature. We expect students to read for at least twenty minutes
each evening. All students read Holes by Louis Sachar, Summer of the Monkeys
by Wilson Rawls, Z for Zachariah by Robert C. OBrien, and Downriver by
Will Hobbs. These titles might change as we frequently purchase new young adult
literature for our reading program. Literature circle units are based on the
genres of mystery, science fiction, realistic fiction, and multicultural literature;
we utilize the First Steps Reading Continuum to help guide our reading instruction
and assessment.
