Study of the postulational system and development of formal proof through
topics such as:
Congruence Parallelism
Perpendicularity Properties of Polygons
Circles and Spheres Lines and Planes
The goals throughout the math curriculum are for students to value mathematics,
to become confident in their abilities, to become problem solvers, and to
reason and apply mathematics to real life situations.
Math Placement
Teacher recommendation and screening at the beginning of each school year help to ensure students are placed in the correct math level.
The main differences between regular and honors math classes are:
REGULAR CLASSES
Textbook = Connected Math Program Series
o Builds around real world problems and situations
o Uses a series of small soft-covered texts, one book per topic
o Does not follow step-by-step procedures in the texts
o Teaches math behind the problems during class period by working on investigation
problems, often in groups
o Encourages discussion and thinking, use of manipulatives and calculators
o Validates variety of approaches
o Emphasizes class note taking
HONORS CLASSES
Textbook = Glencoe Series
o Uses a more traditional textbook approach
o Uses a heavy hard-covered text, one for entire year
o Introduces each new idea by giving an example and solving it, step by step
o Encourages learning by memorizing and patterning
o Moves at a fast pace
o Requires strong organizational skills
o Uses group discussions and manipulative approach for some topics
