The Casey Diversity Team is a group of parents and staff who meet monthly to address diversity and equity issues at Casey and to plan events.  We work closely with the PTA, the Latino Parent group, the administration, and staff members to support a variety of programs and events at Casey Middle School.

OUR MISSION: To help address issues of inequity in our schools and community by providing programming and resources for families and the parent community.

  • Be role models for our children.
  • Raise awareness among parents.
  • Reduce the segregation between groups.
  • Share the power and privilege.

MEETINGS: We meet for one hour on the 1st (sometimes 2nd) Thursday of each month.
We vary the time of the meetings in order to accommodate a range of schedules.  We meet at Casey.

History of Casey Diversity Team

The BVSD Equity Office trained parents from Casey, Platt, Heatherwood, Douglas and Manhattan in cultural awareness/diversity issues in the fall of 2008.  Casey and Platt formed a joint Parent Diversity Leadership Team.

District’s Goal:
to improve the school climate, lower the dropout and suicide rates, lessen the achievement gap, and reduce the barriers to success for less dominant groups in our community.
The Equity Office has since been cut by the District.

Equity Concepts and Goals: The team is working to raise awareness about a range of diversity issues, including race; ethnicity: culture, religion, language; ability; gender; sexuality; income; educational level; body size.  Dominant groups have more power, privilege, and status in the community.  Kids who are not in the dominant group are at higher risk to drop out and achieve less.
