Steve Ollanik has been teaching at Columbine for his entire educational career, since 1996. He has taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Before teaching he spent 16 years in Silicon Valley as a software engineer and engineering manager. He has a Bachelors degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as a Masters in Education from University of Colorado . He has also received extensive training in differentiating instruction and teaching English as a Second Language. When not in the classroom, Mr. Ollanik is an avid reader and hiker. His biggest passion, though, is woodworking. Most of his summers are spent working in a woodshop in his garage.
Jen Hutman grew up in a small town outside of Baltimore, Maryland. She began her undergraduate studies at Penn State University and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at CU- Boulder with an emphasis in Photography & Printmaking. After working for several years in film production, graphic design and website design, Jen went back to school to receive her teaching certification and to pursue a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology.
Jen is excited to be teaching at Columbine for the fifth year. She is currently completing another master’s degree in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity through the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before working for the Boulder Valley Public Schools, she taught fourth grade for several years in the Brighton 27j School District, and Pre-K / Kindergarten for three years at a private school in Boulder. She also had the opportunity to spend over a year living and teaching third grade in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Prior to teaching in elementary education, she taught Multimedia Design at Front Range Community College.
Jen spends most of her free time with her two awesome sons: Jaden, who is now in the seventh grade at Manhattan Middle School, and Jacoby who is almost six months old. In her spare time, Jen likes to be as active as possible. She enjoys doing yoga, snowboarding, road-biking, camping, and just about anything else that allows her to explore and photograph the outdoors. Jen also loves to play her guitar, sing, and write music. She really hopes to be a rock star in her next life!
Having had the opportunity of growing up bilingual in the United States, education, but more specifically, bilingual education was a natural choice for dedicating a career to. Noticing a great need for providing all students with this wonderful opportunity to develop increased social, cultural, linguistic, and cognitive capacities, motivates his everyday practice. Jorge has a MA in Bilingual/Multicultural Education and has been teaching for nine years. He spends much of his free time traveling with his wife Yolanda, and competing in triathlons in far away places.
