  • Financial Aid Planning Night:  January 24th, 6:30 pm in the FHS Auditorium.  Speaker, Rob Drybread from CU Boulder will present information applicable to all colleges’ financial aid processes
  • Help with FAFSA forms:  February 12th is COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY; an opportunity for students and parents to get free help in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be eligible for federal aid from grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and student loans.  For locations and times see:  http://www.collegegoalcolorado.org
  • Renowned Speaker, PETER VAN BUSKIRK, will give an interactive presentation on the College Admissions Process:  Monday, February 6th, 6:30 pm, at Broomfield High School.  All BVSD students and families are welcome to hear this nationally popular presentation, THE ADMISSIONS Game.  For more information:  http://www.theadmissiongame.com

·         Practice SAT is being given on Tuesday, February 21, 8:30-12:30 am, at Fairview.  Includes score report and individual review by sponsoring test prep company.  Bring calculator.  Cost: $20 to benefit the FHS Speech & Debate Team   Register at: Revolution Prep website or call: (877) 738-7737

·         CSU Engineering Day:  February 11th.  Students and families are invited to explore engineering majors and careers on the Fort Collins CSU campus.  To register:  http://www.engr.colostate.edu/students/future-students/undergraduate/exploration-day.html

·         Gap Year Fairs:  February 16th, Peak to Peak Charter School, 800 Merlin, Lafayette, CO, 6:00-8:30pm.   February 18th, Denver Academy, 1:00-4:00pm.         http://www.usagapyearfairs.org/events-schedule/denver-gap-year-fair

·         SUMMER JOBS with Boulder County Youth Corps:  Students ages 14-17 are hired to work 30 hours/week, June 18-August 8 for outdoor community service projects.  Application due: March 30.  http://www.BoulderCounty.org/YouthCorps

  • Senior Class of 2012: There is still plenty of time to investigate college choices.  Many colleges have application deadlines in February, March, and later.  As you research college campuses and other options for your years after high school, come to the Post Grad Center for help with all aspects of your search and application process. VISIT THE POST GRAD WEBSITE for lists of essay contests, academic merit awards, full rides for special programs, recognition for community service, and many others.

 Example Scholarships with approaching deadlines:

Project PAVE Transformations Scholarship – senior or GED who has experienced relationship violence, $4,000, deadline February 1.

Vegetarian Scholarship Award – seniors who promote vegetarianism, essay, $5,000, deadline February 20.

American Chemical Society (ACS) – underrepresented minority students who want to enter the field of chemistry or chemistry-related fields, based on academic merit, leadership skills, and financial need, $5,000, deadline March 1.

Hispanic College Fund – various scholarships from $500 to $10,000, deadline March 1.

See the Future Fund Scholarships – for the blind or visually impaired, $12,000, deadline March 1.

National Italian American Foundation Scholarship – student of Italian American descent OR plans to study Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies, or related field in college, $12,000, deadline March 4.

Boulder Community Hospital Auxiliary Human Health Care Scholarship – Boulder Valley School District Senior planning to attend a Colorado college to pursue an education in human health care, $3,000, deadline March 9.

Some have no specific deadlines:

Christian College Scholarship Drawing – Use this college information site to be entered into a drawing for a college scholarship, $2,500, no deadline.

Colorado Contractors Association CWCF Scholarship Program – Juniors and seniors interested in a career in heavy-highway-municipal-utility construction, $2,500, no deadline.

SIT Study Abroad Scholarships – For semester or summer programs, need based,  $5,000, no deadline.

There are approximately 460 seniors in the class of 2012.

Official test scores for the SAT and ACT need to be sent directly to colleges.  Order these scores online from www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com.

Some colleges will want a transcript showing your grades from the fall semester.  These can be ordered from the Counseling Office in January.   

When requesting financial aid from colleges, students and parents need to fill out the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Information is available on www.fafsa.gov and Fairview will be hosting an information session in the auditorium in January.  Watch for upcoming details.  Some colleges also require the CSS Profile available at www.collegeboard.com.  See the articles available on this website or in the Post Grad Center as well: Strategies for Paying for College.

CREDITS for GRADUATION:  It is also time to check that you are taking the classes required to complete your BVSD graduation requirements.  If you see that you are missing any courses, see your counselor immediately.
