Homework Policy

A homework policy, developed by staff with parent feedback, is in place at Kohl. Each teacher will present his/her homework philosophy, along with grade-level and school-wide expectations, to students and parents at the start of each school year.

The teachers and staff at Kohl believe that developing strong study skills is an integral part of a successful education. We believe that students in the first through fifth grades should be expected to have a nightly (5 out of 7 nights) study time to complete activities that are appropriate in length and content for their age.

Types of Homework

  • Homework may take several forms at Kohl Outside reading for a length of time appropriate to grade level.
  • As a general guideline, an assignment not finished in class will be sent home for homework. These assignments have been taught in class that day and are reviewed by the teacher before being given to the students. Many homework assignments may fall into this category.
  • Other assignments can include those used to strengthen and/or reinforce skills such as working on math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), studying spelling words, or specific Language Arts skills. Many of these assignments involve memorization and repetitive practice and are conducive to parents working one on one with their child.
  • Some assignments are given to enrich or extend a lesson. An example might be a project or report in a content area such as social studies or science. These assignments may need more parent support at home.

Homework Procedures

  • Each grade level has developed a method for students to receive their assignments from the teacher. These procedures along with expectations for parent involvement will be explained at our Parent Information Night, Fall Conferences, and classroom communications. We want parents to be aware of their child's classroom procedures for homework. If at any time you have questions about assignments or homework requirements, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.

How to Help Your Child at Home

  • Take time to sit down with your children and help them schedule time for homework as part of their daily routine. This is especially important when students are learning to deal with long-term assignments. Provide a quiet workspace where children can study undisturbed.
  • Keep their workspace well stocked with the supplies they need to complete their assignments. An appropriate-level dictionary is very helpful for spelling.
  • Help your child obtain a library card from the public library. Assist him/her in choosing interesting books to read. Enjoy reading with your child!? Talk about what you have read. Listen to your child read.
  • Ask your child's teacher for helpful ideas on studying math facts, spelling words, proofreading, etc.
  • Take advantage of educational places/events in your community as often as possible.
