PTA :: Volunteer Positions - 2011/2012
Lafayette Elementary School relies on the generosity, talents, time and energy of volunteers to make a lot of the programs and events successful. Please take a look at the following volunteer opportunities and let us know if you’re interested & available to help out ! These opportunities help faculty, staff , parents and PTA put on vital programs for our student community.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:

ECO-CYCLE ZERO-WASTE STATION STAFF - School days: 10:45am-12:15pm These volunteers play a crucial role in our continued success as an Eco-Cycle Green-Star School. On any school day you can help us -and- for one week, after winter and spring breaks, volunteers oversee the Zero-Waste Station in the cafeteria; helping students to remember what goes where! Time commitment: approximately 10:45am – 12:15pm any day of the week. For more information, please contact Debra McCloskey at debra@superstructs.com.

WATCH D.O.G.S. - calling on LES Dads! Now through May Learn about the nation wide program that puts a greater ‘dad’ presence in local elementary schools. Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) encourages male relatives of their student body to volunteer to be at the school 1 day each school year. We are looking for dads interested in participating in being a volunteer for a day (or more) at Lafayette Elementary. Time commitment: Sept 9th Pizza Party -and- 1/2 or full school day during the 2011-12 school year. For more information, please contact David Ziegert at watchdogslafayette@gmail.com.

READING TO END RACISM - Now and September 23rd Reading to End Racism (RER) is a program dedicated to teaching tolerance, acceptance, and exploring racism with elementary and middle school students. We are looking for another person or two to help us coordinate the program for Lafayette Elementary this year. Duties include but may not be limited to: attending planning meetings, creating awareness posters with students, creating a welcome sign and helping to greet readers during the event, ensuring copies of information are ready for readers and assisting with set-up and/or take-down of tables and snacks for the event. JOG-A-THON COMMITTEE - September through October 5th Help put on a wildly popular, healthy tradition & fundraiser for Lafayette Elementary! The jog-a-thon brings the student body, staff and parents to the athletic fields where students earn money for laps they run. You will be instrumental in helping make this October 5th athletic event run smoothly. Needs include: recording laps run, working water stations, tallying class laps, distributing snacks after the race, counting funds raised and more! Time commitment: 1 to 8 hour(s). "LENDING CLOSET" TEAM - now through May Help us manage Lafayette Elementary's new "lending closet" of dishes, utensils and cups. Work with team to establish procedures around outreach, delivery, retrieval, cleaning (using the school's industrial dishwasher) and stocking our quality supplies. LAFAYETTE ELEMENTARY YEARBOOK - Now through May Lafayette Elementary PTA is now involved with supporting the LES yearbook. If you love to take pictures of kiddos, teachers and school events, then we need you to help with the 2010-2011 yearbook. We would like to have 6 volunteers for about 6-8 hours each throughout the year. Please contact Patty Erickson by email at ericksonsinco@msn.com .

FAMILY NIGHT EVENTS - September through March *Each event will need a volunteer committee to plan and run the event:
All-Cultures Night - October 13 - need all roles Cougar Pride Dance - December 9 - need all roles Game Night - January 20 - coordinator is in place; need additional committee members & event staff. Meet the Author Night - March 2 - coordinator is in place; need additional committee members & event staff.
Roles for Family Night Events: *Event Coordinator(s) - Work with team of parent volunteers to plan & execute a family night event. Includes coordination with vendors (i.e. DJ for School Dance) and staff. Work with other committees to participate/have tables at night. Ensure flyer and communications are completed for event. Time commitment: 3-4 hours. *Event Committee Members - Work with coordinator to plan event, determine activities, food needs, signs, communications creation, set-up/clean-up, staff during event, etc. Time commitment: 2-3 hours. *Event Staff - Volunteers are required for the night of each event to manage the event, and for such things as set-up, clean-up, etc. Time commitment: 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Library Volunteer - Now and Ongoing Parent volunteers are needed for the library to help with check-out, re-shelving, processing or repairing! We have 4-5 classes per day checking out books and over 200 books each day that need checked-in and re-shelved. We also have books that need repaired or processed to be put on the shelves. If you can help for 1-2 hours each week, please consider helping out in the library. We especially need assistance at 9-10:30am and 1-2:30pm, when students are using the library. Some training is involved, but once you are trained you can come at different times each week, or come every other week. Some parents come during their child's library time, which allows them to see their child's classmates and volunteer when students are checking out books. "ORIGINAL WORKS" TEAM - October and November This is a fun fundraiser where our Lafayette Elementary kids' art is used to create one-of-a-kind keepsakes such as mugs, shirts, and notecards. In addition, this program generates over $2000 profit for LES! Responsibilities include working with coordinator and team to: process orders and deliver & distribute items at school. "EARTH DAY" Team - March through week of April 22 Join the Lafayette Elementary "Green Team" in pulling together fun and meaningful Earth Day activities in conjunction with other programs. Time commitment 2-4 hours. Please contact Debra McCloskey at debra@superstructs.com

GARDEN TO TABLE PROGRAM Garden to Table is an elementary school program that uses food to illustrate the relationship between humans and nature. By involving kids in planting & cultivating food, educating them on wellness & nutrition, nurturing the environment and sustainability, and giving them a chance to eat & prepare food they’ve grown cooperatively, we hope our kids will make healthy choices as adults.
We need all kinds of people to keep this wonderful program at Lafayette Elementary thriving, including people who want to be in the garden & classroom with our kids and people to help maintain the gardens.
