A85 AP Art History Level: 9-12
Offered: 2 semester sequence, 5 credits per semester
Prerequisites: None
AP Art History offers both the artistically inclined and those wishing to learn art history the opportunity to do so and earn college credit at the same time. This college-level course covers art history from the beginning of time up until present day, exploring many different cultures. Instruction will use traditional slide format and also studio art projects. Students will become knowledgeable producers and consumers of visual art; some lessons will also address the visual art standards. Students may take the advanced placement exam at the end of the course and possibly receive college credit. (*Grade weighted in this course)

A38 Arts of the World Level: 9-12
Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits
In Arts of the World, students will study art from various cultures and produce works of art in the style of the culture studied. Media used could be painting, drawing, clay, paper mache, wood, fibers, etc. Some art projects could include creating Persian miniatures, Oxacan animal sculptures, African masks, Balinese Batik, Japanese silk painting, Huichol beading, etc.

Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits each.
Drawing & Painting 1 is a foundation course that emphasizes basic design concepts using two dimensional media such as; pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, tempera, airbrush, acrylic, etc. in studio production. Students will also study artists, styles and cultures in art history from diverse points of view.
In Drawing & Painting 2, 3, and 4 students will use advanced techniques to produce works of art for a portfolio. In addition, students will further develop their critical art skills through a study of aesthetics and criticism. Students will become knowledgeable producers and consumers of visual art.

A35 Foundations in Art Level: 9-12
Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits.
Foundations in Art is a survey course where students can expect a wide variety of art experiences in both 2-D and 3-D areas. Art expression to include drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, sculpture, and pottery. The course will also address the visual art standards. Art history will be an informal component.

Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits each.
Photography 1 is an introductory course, which teaches basic camera handling, film processing, and darkroom technique in a fine art context. Pinhole cameras, 35mm cameras, Polaroid cameras, and digital cameras will be used to create photographs. Historical art traditions in photography will influence assignments. Students will also learn to recognize elements of design to evaluate photographs through critical investigations of aesthetics that have influenced photographers.
In Photography 2, 3, and 4 students will continue to explore the above in greater depth and ability. Students will explore photojournalism, specialty films, and studio photography, etc. in a more independent, sophisticated way. Students will become knowledgeable producers and consumers of photography as art.

Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits each.
Ceramics & Sculpture 1 is a foundation course that emphasizes basic design concepts using three dimensional media such as; clay, wood, paper mache, fibers, found objects, etc. in studio production. Students will study artist, styles, and cultures in art history from diverse points of view.
In Ceramics & Sculpture 2, 3, and 4 students will develop advanced techniques to produce works of art for a portfolio. In addition, students will further develop their critical art skills through a study of aesthetics and criticism. Students will become knowledgeable producers and consumers of visual art.

A 55, A56 Studio Arts 1, 2, & 3 Level: 10 -12
Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits.
This is the class for the graphic artist. Studio Arts will focus on creating fine art for commercial purposes such as magazine ads, billboards, Internet advertisements, packaging designs, etc. Students will work in animation, printmaking, airbrush, computer graphics, drawing, and mixed media. Students will study concepts, artists, and cultures in art history from diverse points of view to understand varied consumer tastes. In addition, students will further develop their critical art skills through a study of aesthetics and criticism; lessons will also address the visual art standards. Students will become knowledgeable producers and consumers of visual art.

Independent Study of Art Level: 10-12 With prior application and permission from art instructor.
Offered: 1 semester, 5 credits each
Students who are advanced may take an independent study in art. Students must have prior approval from the art instructor by filling out an application form. In Independent Study of Art, students will further develop their fine art skill in two or three areas to be discussed and agreed on by the art instructor and the student.

* Fees are for consumable materials student will use during the course of the semester. Additional supplies may be needed and can be purchased from local businesses or from the art department. Cameras can also be rented from the art department for a minimal cost. If a student has difficulty paying fees, he/she should not hesitate to see an instructor. We do not want any student at Monarch High School to miss out on a class because of the inability to pay a fee.
