Step 9: Writing the Final Draft

 The Final Draft

This is the part where you polish your work and make it look good. Often part of the paper's grade is based on formatting. A little bit of attention to detail will help keep you from losing points in this area.

Formatting Checklist

  • Review your teacher's formatting requirements.
  • Font: Did your teacher ask for a specific font or type of font? If not, "Times" is usually a good choice. Usually you should stick to a "print" font. Avoid, "script" or calligraphy-style fonts.
  • Size: Did your teacher specify a font size'! If not, "12 point" is usually a safe bet.
  • If your teacher didn't say whether the paper should be single or double-spaced, "1.5" spacing is often a good choice.
  • Margins: Usually stick with one inch left, right, top and bottom, unless your teacher specifies something else.
  • Page Numbering: Include your last name and the page number on the top right comer all pages, unless your teacher directs differently.
  • Title: Have a title on the first page.
  • Heading! Title Page: Include your name, the date, the class and the period on either a title page or a heading on the first page. Follow your teacher's specifications.
  • Other: Did your teacher want you to attach a rubric or other information'? If so, make sure to remember to do this.

Oh! Those Evil Computers! If you are e-mailing the paper to yourself or are printing on a different computer, check the spacing and punctuation to make sure nothing was changed.
