Doris Candelarie

Doris Candelarie is in her second year at the helm of Alicia Sanchez Elementary School.  She comes to Sanchez with 28 years of experience in education at all levels.  She operated her own daycare for three years then decided to get her teaching license.  While in college, she worked as a para-educator.  As an elementary teacher she taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.  She also taught at the middle school level for 2 years and taught 6th-8th grade ESL students.  Next at the middle school level she worked as a Dean, an Assistant Principal, and a Principal.  She found she missed working with students and teachers and the work that happens at the school level.  In the summer of 2007 she found her way to Sanchez Elementary where she plans to stay for a while.

Doris has a BA in Elementary Education with emphasis on Bicultural Education from the University of Northern Colorado.  She holds a MA in Education: Teaching and Learning from Regis University, and is currently in the final stages of attaining a Ph.D. from the University of Denver.

Before coming to BVSD, Doris spent her career in Brighton, Colorado.  She states that her work achievements happen everyday she touches the life of a child, teacher or parent.  Among her other achievements:
Teacher of the Year, Class of 2000 (they were my 3rd graders in 1990)... Brighton School District
Brighton Chamber of Commerce... 1996 Teacher Honoree
Hispanic Advisory Council Person of the Year... 2007
Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society... Education Honoree

Doris' professional affiliations include:
    Colorado Association of School Executives
National Association of Elementary School Principals
    Association for Curriculum and Development
    Phi Delta Kappa

A Colorado native, Doris is married to her her high school sweetheart, Jim for 30 years.  Doris counts as a personal achievement the fact that she and Jim have raised two thoughtful, intellegent, compassionate and independent daughters - Kandice (29) and Kristina (27).  They are also responsible pet parents of Miss Lucky Lu and their grand-dog, Mr. Elvis.  She and Jim enjoy a wonderful extended family including parents, in-laws, 5 brothers, 14 nieces and nephews, and 7 great nieces and nephews.

Doris spends her free time reading... she has piles of books everywhere in her house.  When she gets outside, she enjoys hiking, running, and biking with her husband and their dog Miss Lucky Lu.  She also enjoys exploring her creative side through cooking or mountain gardening.  They currently live in the foothills outside of Boulder.

Something you may not know about Doris - she enjoys all kinds of music and thinks that i-Tunes is the greatest invention ever!  She has hundreds of very interesting play-lists for every musical taste.

Assistant Prinicipal

David Tanaka

David Tanaka is the Assistant Principal here at Sanchez. Mr. Tanaka was a teacher for many years at Escuela Bilingue Pioneer, Lafayette’s dual-immersion school, before moving into administration. He is a National Board Certified teacher in English as a New Language, and speaks English and Spanish. He has served as an administrator at Superior Elementary, Lafayette Elementary, and Emerald Elementary. He received his BA from UCLA in English Literature, completed his teaching licensure work at Western State College in Gunnison (brrr!), received his MA from CU Boulder in Equity, Diversity, and Multicultural Education, and, most recently, completed his principal licensure work at CU Denver.

You will probably see Mr. Tanaka around Lafayette (probably at Santiago’s!) with his wife, Sara Anderson, and his two daughters, Ruby Jane (4 years old) and Lucy Quinn (7 months old)—they live behind the Wal-Mart on Highway 287, close to Waneka Lake. Colorado is such a great place to get outdoors throughout the year, and his family enjoys hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and fishing (just Mr. Tanaka and Ruby Jane right now). When at home, Mr. Tanaka loves to play with his daughters, read fiction and non-fiction books, and cook (lots of barbecue). He would like to someday learn to play the accordion.

Mr. Tanaka would like to thank the Sanchez Staff and parent community for the warm welcome, and looks forward to helping Sanchez students succeed at the very highest levels! He considers it a great honor to have the chance to make a contribution with such an incredible team!
