Alicia Sanchez Administration

Doris Candelarie, Principal

Doris has been at the helm of Alicia Sanchez International since 2007.  She has over 25 years of experience in education at all levels including: operating her own daycare center, elementary teacher, middle school teacher, middle school dean and principal, and Executive Director of Schools.  After three years in the school district central office, she found she missed working at the school level with the students and teachers.  She looked for a community neighborhood school and found her way to Sanchez where she plans to stay for a while.

Doris has a BA in Elementary Education with emphasis on Bicultural Education from the University of Northern Colorado. She holds a MA in Education: Teaching and Learning from Regis University, and is a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy from the University of Denver.

Before coming to BVSD, Doris spent her career in Brighton, Colorado. She states that her work achievements happen everyday she makes a difference in the life of a child, teacher or parent.

Among her other achievements:
Brighton 27J Teacher of the Year, Class of 2000 (they were my 3rd graders in 1990)
Brighton Chamber of Commerce... 1996 Teacher Honoree
Hispanic Advisory Council Person of the Year... 2007
Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society... Education Honoree

Her professional affiliations include:

A Colorado native, Doris is married to her her high school sweetheart, Jim for 30+ years. Doris counts as a personal achievement the fact that she and Jim have raised two thoughtful, intellegent, compassionate and independent daughters, Kandice and Kristina. She is also a recent grandmother to Lily and Lucas, which has put a whole new level of fun in her life.

Doris spends her free time reading... she has piles of books everywhere in her house. When she gets outside, she enjoys hiking, running, and biking with her husband. She also enjoys exploring her creative side through cooking or mountain gardening. They currently live in the foothills outside of Boulder. Something you may not know about Doris - she enjoys all kinds of music and thinks that i-Tunes is the greatest invention ever! She has hundreds of very interesting playlists for every musical taste.

When you see Doris around the school, be sure to stop and chat.  She enjoys getting to know all the sanchez Families.

Jimmy Montaño, Dean of Students

My name is Jim Montaño and I am the Dean of Students. This is my first year at Alicia Sanchez International and I am enjoying getting the know all the students and parents. I have taught in a number of places including Brighton, Windsor and Greeley. My responsibilities include the Family Outreach Program and a lot of duties that help make Alicia Sanchez International run smoothly and assure that all students are successful, and that includes student discipline.

I grew up in a migrant family and Spanish was my first language so I, too, am an ESL student. I am a U.S. Army veteran who graduated from Officer Candidate School with an officer's commission. When I left the Army, I was a First Lieutenant. I was stationed in Hanau, Germany for the entire time I was in the Army. I returned to Alamosa, Colorado and attended Adams State College (it's a University now!). I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Linguistically Different then earned a Master's Degree in Reading and Science, also from Adams State. After several years of teaching, I attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins and earned a second Master's Degree in School Administration with an Administrator's Endorsement.

I have two beautiful children. My daughter, Paloma, is 30 years old and has her own catering business in Thornton. My son, Armando, is 25 years old and he received his Bachelor's Degree from Adams State University in December 2012. My wife, Elena, is from Honduras and is also a teacher. We live in Greeley.

I look forward to meeting all the Alicia Sanchez families and please drop in to say "hi".
