I grew up in Michigan with my parents and two sisters. My parents were research chemists. It made for a fun, if somewhat quirky, childhood. My parents always encouraged us to think for ourselves, try new things and constantly reach for new knowledge. It is a great attitude that I have tried to pass on to our sons.

My husband Hans Peter, and I have two sons, Peter and Christian. Christian is a Mechanical Engineer and Peter is a Historic Preservationist. Hans Peter is the vp of data and policy for a professional organization of state university presidents and governing boards.

We have lived in Colorado, Seattle and Hawai’i. We are fortunate to still have a cottage in Waimea. It makes for wonderful vacations! My family loves to travel. We have visited numerous national parks; hiked on fresh lava; walked the Tower of London and Stonehenge; kayaked in the Puget Sound; climbed into caves created by ocean waves off the coast of Scotland; explored a 150 year old ship; hiked in rainforests with huge, ancient trees; toured the Louvre in Paris; flew around Mt. McKinley; traveled the fjords of Norway and visited so many more places. When we aren’t traveling we enjoy music, cooking, reading, entertaining and spending time with family.

I began teaching in the Boulder Valley School District in 1993. I started at Coal Creek Elementary School and in 1997 transferred to Superior. In 2009, I passed the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.  Being a National Board teacher is considered the "gold standard' of teaching. I love the magic of 1st grade. The children who look so little on the first day of school quickly grow into independent, thoughtful, excited learners. The growth – both physical and educational – that occurs during 1st Grade is tremendous. It is a joy sharing that time with such bright and enthusiastic people.
