LA0 Study Skills (Sheltered)

  • Course Length: 1 quarter
  • Prerequisites: None
  • Credits: 5

This class is for English as second language (ESL) students who need help in their academic classes. Study skill strategies and techniques appropriate to non-English proficient (NEP) and limited English proficiency (LEP) learner are instructed and applied to academic assignments. Students may work on homework with tutors and teachers. Supplemental materials are available for students. Teachers for this class may keep in contact with the students’ academic course teachers to monitor progress.

 

LA1 English as a Second Language 1

  • Course Length: 1, 2, 3 or 4  quarters
  • Prerequisites: No previous study of English, NEP1 and NEP2 designations
  • Credits: 5 per quarter

ESL-1 emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students study practical English vocabulary and sentence structure. They develop reading and writing skills through participation in acculturation activities.  

 

LA2 English as a Second Language 2

  • Course Length: 1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters
  • Prerequisites: LA1 or department recommendation, LEP3 and LEP4 designations
  • Credits: 5 per quarter

ESL-2 emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students study grammar, idioms, pronunciation and cultural awareness. The class also emphasizes reading comprehension and writing development. 

 

LA3 English as a Second Language 3

  • Course Length: 2 quarters
  • Prerequisites: LA2 or department recommendation, LEP3 and LEP4 designations
  • Credits: 5 per quarter

ESL language development emphasizes a variety of communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This class will provide a necessary bridge for students between ESL 2 and sheltered world literature and composition. Students will develop reading and writing skill integral to their success in subsequent literature courses. This class begins with an emphasis on the structural elements of written communication and continued study of grammar and usage, vocabulary development, to fill in gaps in students’ English language development. Students will gain confidence in delivering speeches and oral presentations in front of their peers.
