The Health Occupations Program offers a one semester or one year certification in Nursing Assistant, Health Forensics Technology, and Health Science Technology Education.  Students can earn 12-30 credits depending on the chosen course. 

 

 Course Description

 

V70 Nursing Assistant (15 Credits) Fall PM

This one semester course is approved by the Colorado State Board of Nursing, and successful students may sit for the Board of Nursing, and successful students may sit for the Certified Nursing Assistants examination.  In this course, students develop skills in patient assessment, helping patients with personal hygiene, assisting patients with transfer and mobility, and assessing patients’ vital signs.  Clinical experiences are required in a nursing home or hospital and the work-study program is a critical part of the program.  Classroom theory related to patient care is also required. BVSD Health Curriculum is also included in the course of study.  This course fulfills the 5 credits in Health required for graduation.

V84 Health Forensic Technology (15 credits) Spring PM

Do you like a good mystery? Are you always first to figure out who did it and how they did it when you watch a movie or read a book? Here is your chance to become part of a team of forensic investigators. You will collect and analyze evidence from a crime scene. You must use logical thought processes and scientific inquiry skills as you trace the steps of the crime and determine whether or not the science accurately explains the crime.

This one semester course is designed to challenge students with topics such as fingerprinting, DNA analysis, blood typing and spattering, trajectories (for ballistics as well as blood spattering) comparative anatomy, and chemical analysis of drugs, poisons, and trace evidence, and the dynamics of Physics.

Students will learn about the careers involved with Forensic Science and will play mock roles as experts in the field to solve crimes.  They will learn team work in solving the mock crimes and have a chance to change their roles as the year progresses.  The students will all be given the tools to interpret data and techniques involved for both chemical and biological analysis of evidence.

V85 Health Science Technology Education (30 credits) Fall and spring AM

The Health Science Technology Program prepares its graduates with basic knowledge and skills to competently assume the role of a Nursing Assistant, in institutions, homes, and community agencies and also gives them the opportunity to check into other medical options available. Graduates of the program receive a vocational certificate of completion.  Nursing Assistant completers will be eligible to take the State Certification of Nurse Aides Examination upon graduation from the program.  Each student is required to complete an independent study as well as a clinical rotation in a different health care field.  Students will participate in the HOSA student organization where a student will engage in leadership activities and competitions.   

This one year program gives the student the option to take part in an independent study in other medical fields such as:  Pharmacy Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Physical Therapy Aide, Dental Aide, and other exciting medical careers.

 

 Leadership Opportunities

 

HOSA is a national career and technical student organization for students in the Health Occupations fields.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in leadership skills and technical events related to their technical training.
