Location:

En route to Tshane, Botswana

Background:

I’m on the road again, headed north to our next site in Tshane, Botswana.  I’m really hoping to see some wildlife, since we’ll be turning off the highway and getting into some areas that are known for elephants, lions, hippos and giraffes!

Situation:

I’ve spent most of my life researching plants and sometimes forget that the Kingdom Animalia can be just as exciting (well, almost: ).  I realized I have no idea what the classification is for most of the animals I’m hoping to see.  Are giraffes in the same family as horses?  How closely are elephants related to rhinos?  What the heck is a hipp?

Assignment

Choose an animal that is native to Botswana from the list below.  Use your resources to figure out the entire classification (Kingdom through species) of the animal of your choice.  Don’t forget to warn me if there’s something I should do to stay safe around this animal.  Someone told me more people are killed here by hippos than lions!

Thanks, guys! Heather here: I can't wait to show you all the animal pictures I've taken so far! I'm having trouble uploading pictures, but hopefully will get them posted in the next couple of days. I saw two groups of lions from a distance and one VERY close up the other day!! Apparently, a male ostrich makes a sound a lot like a lion in order to scare off other animals. I heard it the other night, and it sure scared me! I didn't leave my tent until morning!
