School News:

First trimester progress reports will be going on this Friday. Please sign and have your child return the envelope to their first period teacher.

Ms. Neuman is hoping to find a couple of volunteers who like to paint! She has purchased some beautiful blue paint to brighten up the upstairs computer lab. She is willing to come in on a weekend to work if volunteers would be willing to paint one side of her room. Another possibility is painting on October 12th when kids aren't in school.

Students will be starting their research project next week. They are to pick a country that they would like to know more about. On Friday they will get the guidelines and we will have computer lab time to complete some of the work next week. Other parts will probably need to be completed outside of class time. Students will have options on how to report out their information. Make sure they have their guideline to help them complete their option!

M15 In Chapter 5, students are learning how to solve proportions. They are working with similar figures, scale drawings and scale factors. Students will get a review packet on block day for the assessment on Friday.

M25 This week students are learning application of proportions. Summative test on Chapter 5 will be on Monday, December 10.

Social Studies-Mr. Herbstreit

Social Studies:

We are reviewed geography skills and vocabulary this week and on block day will start an activity based on the early settlements of the Mesopotamian Region. Each group tries to form relationships with other groups and decide what direction they want their culture to take as they work to advance in; agriculture, city building, warfare, art, writing and knowledge.

L.A.:

Currently, 7th grade is reading Seedfolks which will focus on the understanding: "How do we impact or bring a change to a community?" This overarching question will encompass the following skills:

· Figurative Language

· Sentence Structures

· Compare and Contrast writing

· Narrative Short story

· Traits: Organization, Conventions, Dialogue

· Analysis of a Character through Poetry

· Vocabulary- study of Greek, Latin, prefixes, suffixes

Current Due Dates:

· Field trip forms 9-28-12

· Figurative Language Quilt Square 9-28-12

· Nightly reading- Please check your students planner for 3 responses per week. These responses will relate to the the read aloud or the free choice book.

Life Science-Mrs. Estes

Science:

This week in science we are finishing our study of the ‘what is science and scientific inquiry unit’. Students will have a short summative assessment on Friday to finish up the unit. All corrections and missing work needs to be turned in by Friday. We will be starting to explore what makes something living vs. non-living. We will also identify the needs of living things. All living things need certain things to survive. Brainstorm ideas with your student about what all living things need to survive. Hint: internet and cable are not on the list :).
