In 2009, Ms. Jordan's classes were thrilled to invite David Ayers and Angela Gaylor, co-directors of Broadway in Boulder Studios at the Parlando School for the Arts, into their classroom. Both David and Angela boast impressive theatrical resumes, and David played Fiyero in Wicked on Broadway. Their visit ushered in a partnership with Broadway in Boulder that has seen David and Angela continue their outreach with the Readers Workshop classes, who are currently studying In the Heights (2008 Tony Award, Best Musical).
David and Angela were so impressed with the students that they continued to interact with them throughout the 2009-10 school year. In addition to coming into the class in October to speak to the students, they also accompanied them on their field trip to Wicked at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Ultimately, they both served as judges for the New York Writing Contest.
In April, David and Angela will return to our classroom for a third time to talk with the New York Writing Contest winners about their upcoming trip to New York and to accompany all the Readers Workshop students on their field trip to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to see the touring cast performance of In the Heights.
David and Angela have been instrumental in teaching the students about musical theater, thereby expanding the students' understanding of both literature and music. They have given freely of their time, and their expertise and feedback has inspired several students to pursue their own burgeoning interest in the theater.
We are thrilled to continue to work closely with David and Angela as representatives of Parlando School for the Arts as we prepare to visit New York, and as we look toward the 2010-2011 school year and the theatrical and musical possibilities that the new year will usher in!
