Welcome to Physical Education!
Teachers: Mr. Travis Maron & Mr. Al Pallone

Why have Physical Education?
Physical Education at Coal Creek Elementary is an important part of each child's total education. Physical Education is more than recess, more than a time to play, it's a time for learning. Our first aim is to help students improve their motor skill development. Motor skills are critical life skills that enable us to go about our daily lives effectively and safely. In addition to helping students become more skillful movers, we attempt to help them feel good about themselves as movers so they can feel comfortable participating in new and different activities. We try to help students experience success in physical education so that they will enjoy and participate in physical activity both at school and at home. If we give students a good foundation of skill development, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes towards themselves in physical activity, they will be well on their way to becoming adults who enjoy the benefits of physically active and healthy lifestyles.

Suggestions that will help promote and increase safe participation in physical education classes.

  • Please remind all students to wear tennis shoes (no sandals, jellies, thongs, dress shoes, or boots) and comfortable clothing on physical education days.
  • If students cannot participate due to illness or injury, please send a note.
  • Show an interest in your students activities in physical education. Ask them to keep you informed about what they are working on and learning, and encourage them to practice at home or at recess.

Parents, please feel free at any time to observe your student during physical education.

What will you be learning in class?

We will work  together to help student's achieve the following class goals:

 1. FITNESS--
    Students will:
discuss goals based on Physical Fitness testing scores (3rd-5th grades only)
practice exercises which meet personal fitness goals (3rd-5th grades only)
practice safe exercises for a lifetime of fitness.

 2. LIFETIME MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES--
    Students will:
learn how to move efficiently within the context of a given space
learn the skills needed for new games and review previously practiced skills. (We encourage our students to keep an open mind when trying new and difficult activities)

3.PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND HEALTH-- Do you know why it is important to be ACTIVE?  (You will!)
The students will learn that being physically active can mean something different for each of them.

 4. SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ACCEPTANCE - It is OK to fail and make mistakes in PE as long as we tried our best  and did not give up.
Everyone who tries and does their best is a WINNER!  We encourage students to participate not only for skill development, but to also develop a positive self image. Class activities are presented in such a way that every child achieves some success, therefore developing positive feelings about self worth.

Many opportunities are presented throughout the school year for cooperative activity and learning. We challenge our students to be engaged and creative in their problem solving and allow others to have creative freedom as well.

 5. SAFETY HABITS
Since keeping active is so important for your personal well-being, we will point out and practice SAFETY in EVERYTHING we do.
