Learning to Breathe!
The start of this year has been a rocky one - from packing up and labeling 32 boxes of weeded books from last spring, to rearranging the library schedule several times, to getting all kids computer logins organized and shared with teachers.  I usually think backwards - where do I want to end - and work my way forward through all the steps I need to get there.  That hasn't worked so well, this year, and I tend to get "frazzled" pretty quickly/easily.  At the recent BVSD Health Fair, I discovered that I have high blood pressure.  I can manage this through diet and exercise, but the most important thing is to teach myself to RELAX and BREATHE!

My personal goal this year is to remember how to "go with the flow" and keeps things (both good and bad) in perspective.  With the recent Fourmile and Loveland fires, it has made me think about what's really important (family, health, friends) and what's not so important (revising schedules, re-doing lists and other unpleasant, but necessary tasks).  When I feel myself edging toward that frazzled state, I'll just whisper to myself, "BREATHE," and take a moment to do just that.

New Post, for the New Year!
As you can see, I haven't blogged for QUITE a long time.  We are participating in a Tech Class here at CCE, and one of our sessions was on how to create and edit web pages.  This made me look at mine!  I had last year's library schedule, AND last year's Book Fair info.  OOPS!  In an effort to be a "New Me" in the "New Year," my goal is to post at least once a month.

My post for January has lots of "new" in it:

- NEW American Library Association's Newbery and Caldecott Award winners.
- NEW Tech Class for teachers at CCE, where we are all striving to become more "tech-savvy."
- NEW book fair coming up in February.
- NEW tap show for me, coming up in April, entitled "The Economy: The Musical."

This is part of my tech class "homework," and I think I'm done.

Happy New Year to all!

Safari Book Fair
What a great time we had at the Safari Book Fair!  We had many visitors, of all ages, at our book fair, including a costumed elephant who helped us publicize the event.  We had contests (which are still ongoing, by the way) and prizes galore.  A velvet zebra pen, on a rope, anyone?  Each staff member received a $10 gift certificate from the "Book Fairy" with shich to purchase books, and 15 kids won $6 gift certificates in a school-wide drawing.  Coal Creek library purchased tons of  new books for the library, including the "hot items" of the book fair - The 39 Clues, and Found. Finally, through the generosity of our Coal Creek Community, we raised $300 for the SEGA Girls School in Tanzania, Africa.  This school, co-founded by Coal Creek parent, Ashley Devery, gives girls in this impoverished area a chance for a better life through education.  Thanks to all the volunteers who made this one of our best book fairs, ever!

Happy Reading,
Mrs. Scott

Life Lessons from Tap Dancing
Recently, I began taking tap dancing lessons...again.  I took dance as a child, and again in my 30's.  My good friend, Lisa, began taking tap two years ago, and I've been to several of her performances.  Each time, I felt a "tinkling" in my toes - my body's "sense memory" of how it feels to tap dance.

I've begun a journey to take better care of myself, and that includes time for myself, and trying new things.  I joined a book club (that's a whole other topic!) and decided to try tap dancing.
LIFE LESSON: Connect with others who have similar interests!

I found a studio (based on performers in Lisa's shows), bought some new shoes (my old ones didn't fit) and just "showed up" to a class.  What a risk!
LIFE LESSON: Take risks!

I've tried several different levels of class - Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate - since I wasn't sure where I "fit."
LIFE LESSON: Be flexible.

In thinking I was "better" than I was, I kept trying a class that was, clearly, beyond me!  I left the last class, in tears, totally frustrated.  I've tried to push myself beyond what's reasonable.  (As the teacher said...the class had been working on these steps for months; I'd been doing it for two weeks!)
LIFE LESSON: Accept yourself, and be realistic with where you are.

Will I go back?  Sure.  Maybe not to that class, yet, but I'll continue to learn, practice and get better!
LIFE LESSON: Persevere!

FINAL LIFE LESSON: Keep ice packs handy in the freezer!

Happy tapping!

Welcome to my blog - Library Letters !

What is a Blog?

A Blog is a site designed to help you share information. Blogs can be used as news sites, journals, diaries, team sites, and more. It is your place on the World Wide Web.

At least, that's what I learned in my class today!

So...I'm trying something new - blogging!  Some of these will be about me personally; others will be about my job as a librarian, and books.

Keep checking back to see what I'm thinking!

Happy blogging!
