AASL's Role of the Teacher Librarian

In today’s changing economy the need for creative thinking, problem-solving, and information literacy skills is growing. How you can help your child succeed in this changing world? The development of social technology tools has created an interconnected global society where learning, social, and work environments have moved across physical boundaries. To successfully navigate through these fluid boundaries, learners must embody characteristics of global citizenship and be skilled users of information technologies. In 2009, American Association of School Librarians revised the mission of the school library program to reflect the expanding responsibilities of the teacher librarian in helping learners develop the skills needed to be successful in work and in life.
The teacher librarian empowers students to be:

  • critical thinkers,
  • enthusiastic readers,
  • skillful researchers,
  • and ethical users of information." (Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs)
