Junior Great Books

Crest View’s School Accountability Committee (SAC), funded by the ROCV, sponsors Junior Great Books.  This program stresses the enjoyment of literature for its own sake, and helps our children develop comprehension, critical thinking, speaking and listening skills.  Children are encouraged to ask questions about the meaning of the stories they read, and to explore, support and develop their own insights.  Approximately 200 students in grades K-5 participated in the program each year.

The program leaders are parent volunteers who have participated in a training course presented by the Great Books organization.  The leaders contribute to group discussions by asking open ended questions designed to help the children think about what motivates the story’s characters, guiding students to come up with their own ideas based on the author’s text.
