Frequently Asked Questions by New Families to Crest View

Welcome to Crest View Elementary School. Here are some frequently asked questions from new families to our school. Perhaps you are new to Boulder or changing schools within Boulder. If you are coming to Crest View any time after kindergarten, this document is for you! If you have any additional questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to contact any of the parents listed on the Crest View website who are members of our “Welcome Committee”.

What does my child need for school?

It is important that your child bring a backpack. A list of school supplies can be found on the BVSD website for each grade level. Go to the “parents” tab at http://bvsd.org/schools/crestview/Pages/default.aspx and find the supply list for your grade level. Students should bring their backpack to school every day.
We’re living in a dry climate so many children find it helpful to have a small water bottle they can keep at their desk or in their backpack. Sunscreen should be applied in the morning before school. Please remember that there is outdoor recess whenever possible, so dress your child appropriately. Layers are practical since it is often cool in the mornings and warmer as the day progresses.

Transportation

Our eco-friendly town encourages students to get to school safely, under their own power if possible. The district encourages using safe routes to get to Crest View. For the map of our walking/biking area, click here. Students living more than 1.5 miles from school are eligible to take the school bus. For more information on transportation, call (720) 561-5120.

Many Crest View students enjoy walking or biking to school daily. At the west side of the building are bike racks. Your child should bring their own bike lock. Crest View is proud to have the “Freiker (Frequent Biker/Walker)” program which tracks students who come to school under their own power. Volunteers are near the bike racks in the morning to hand out helmet tags and backpack tags used for tracking. Go to www.freiker.org for more information on how to register your child for the walk/bike to school program.

Why does the morning bell ring twice?

The first bell rings at 8:00 AM and signals that all children should be in the building. The second bell rings at 8:02 AM and signals that children arriving after that time should stop at the main office for a late slip.
If my child is not coming to school, who should I notify? - Call the attendance line before 9AM at (720) 561-5459.

Communication

Each Friday, your child will bring home a Friday Folder. This folder contains your child’s work from the week and any other important information you may need. It is crucial you review this folder each week. Please return any forms in the folder on Monday mornings.

The school newsletter is published on-line: “The Crestview Cougar”, a.k.a. the cougar. Hard copies are available in the office in English and Spanish. The Cougar is your most comprehensive location for information on events and what is happening at Crest View.

When will my child have “specials” like library, PE, Music and Art?

Each class will have a weekly schedule for library and art. Classes alternate weeks for Physical Education and Music. If you miss the information at “Back to School” night, your teacher can provide the schedule. Sneakers are needed on PE days and library books need to be remembered on library days.

Lunch

Crest View offers a daily hot lunch and salad bar for students, including organic milk. The menu is published and can be viewed in the school office or on-line by going to www.bvsd.org and clicking on the parent button. Then, click on nutrition services. There you will find out how to set up a hot lunch account or how to qualify for free and reduced lunch. Each morning, the teacher will take a count of who is eating hot lunch that day. For more information about the lunch/breakfast program, click on the red tomato labeled “The School Food Project” on the home page of BVSD website.

You can come to have lunch with your child. Just sign in at the front desk and meet your child at the cafeteria. Lunch for adults is $3.75 in 2009/2010. Try it out!

How will I get to know other parents?

The easiest way to meet other parents is to volunteer at school functions such as the Back to School picnic, Sock Hop, etc.

Each classroom has a room parent. They can assist you in networking with other parents. The Crest View directory will be a good tool to find phone numbers and addresses for classmates.

If you come to Crest View after the annual family directory is published, ask your teacher or classroom parent if you can send a note home in the Friday folder with your child’s classmates. Your note should contain contact information so that parents will know how to contact you for playdates, birthday celebrations, etc.

Can I volunteer in my child’s classroom?

There are a variety of ways for you to support your child’s classroom. Please talk directly to your child’s teacher. All volunteers must sign a volunteer agreement that can be obtained in the front office. Some ways to share your time/talents:

Assist students in computer lab
Lead math groups
Get trained to lead “Jr. Great Book” discussions
Help students with science fair projects

Aside from inside the classroom, there are various ways to help in the garden, library, nurses office etc.

Can I borrow books from the school library?

Yes, see the librarian to obtain a library card to check out materials.

Birthday celebrations

Ask your teacher how celebrations are handled. Generally, a healthy snack can be sent in to celebrate a birthday. Invitations to birthday parties can only be distributed in school if everyone in the class is invited. Otherwise, please mail invitations using addresses found in the directory.

Sports and After-school Activities

Family Resource Services (FRS) offers enrichment programs such as art, world language, yoga, etc. Ask for a listing of the current offerings at the main office. The Y offers an after-school program at Crest View. Go to www.ymcabv.org or call Nan Quinlan (720) 394-7829 for more information.

There is a community bulletin board in the main hallway where you’ll find many other after-school programs advertised.
