Extracurricular Activities

There has been some confusion about where students are to go for activities after school.  Do you realize that some days we have over 200 students participating in after school activities such as Spanish, Hotshots, Intramurals, Bits, Bytes & Bots, Scouts, Yoga and many other groups?  We are asking for parent support in being responsible for their students’ extracurricular activities and schedules and to pick students up on time after the activity.  If a student’s behavior is challenging for an after school program, that student may be asked not to participate.

Some strategies to use to remind students of where to go after school may include a note pinned on their backpack, a lanyard with the activity listed on it, a reminder around their wrist, or a sticker on their shirt.  It is also an option for parents to come to the school and walk their student to the activity.  Students often cannot remember their after school plans during the busy day of learning.  If an activity is canceled, (ie inclement weather, sick teacher, etc.) students will always be allowed to call home to notify parents.  It is wise to have a back up plan in case a child comes home on the bus instead of attending their after school program.

Remember, it is school policy that a student brings a note to school for after school play plans.  The procedure is that the student brings the note from home to the office to be signed, shows it to the teacher and puts it in their backpack in case of confusion on the bus.  Please do not email a teacher or office staff of after school plans.  We sometimes do not get a chance to read emails until late in the day, or may be out of the building.   If your child is allowed to walk home after an activity, please make sure the program teacher is aware of your permission.

We hope you can understand that teachers and office staff are inundated with tasks at the end of the day, and it is difficult to make sure each child goes to their after school activity when we have so many students participating.  Thank you for your support in our effort to keep all students safe at Heatherwood.
