PAWS For Applause

What is “PAWS for Applause” and how are kids selected to have lunch with Mr. O?

PAWS for Applause is a positive behavior reward program recently implemented at Heatherwood.  When a student demonstrates one of the four qualities of good behavior (listed below), a piece of paper with a paw on it (aka “PAWS for Applause”) is given to them.  This “PAWS” is then placed in a bowl in the office.  Every week, student’s names are randomly chosen from the bowl, at least one student for every grade.  These selected students are awarded with the PAWS monthly luncheon with Mr. O or a guest (one of the teachers or faculty members).  This special lunch means getting to sit at a designated table in the cafeteria and eat their lunch with Mr. O or the special guest.  If a student is selected for this special lunch, a note will be sent home to the parents notifying of this special treat & recognition.  Once a student has had a special lunch, this student will not be able to “qualify” for another special lunch until other students get the opportunity for the PAWS bi-monthly luncheon.  Also, students who receive 10 or more “PAWS for Applause” will have a postcard sent home to them in recognition of good behavior & positive role modeling at school.

   Four Qualities of Good Behavior

• Pride & Respect (Example: treating others nicely, taking care of your surroundings, having walking feet & quiet voices in hallways)
• Personal Responsibility (Example: completing assignments, and helping others in need)
• Perseverance (Example: trying new things that are difficult, not giving up, always finishing what they start)
• Peacefulness (Example: good listeners, good team players, communicate calmly)
