Aubrey, Julie O., Julie C., Hope (Session 3), Nichole
Do you love animals? Do you want to learn ways to help animals that need help? We will learn about local animal shelters and rescue groups, the Boulder Humane Society, the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary, and endangered animals around the world. We will have expert guest speakers from several organizations and we will be taking a field trip to the Boulder Humane Society. We will participate in community service in a variety of ways. Possible service activities include baking dog biscuits as a fundraiser, creating animal pins for a fundraiser, constructing squirrel nest boxes for injured squirrels, organizing a supply drive for local animal organizations, creating a book that will be published for a local animal rescue to use as they educate children in schools, and more! If you'd like to learn how to help animals from around the world, animals in your homes, backyards, or across the globe, this is the class for you!
Outsider Art – dare to take a stand! (6,7,8)
Kara and Janice
Do you believe that people should have the freedom to express themselves in art? Do you believe people should be able to create their own eccentric form of beauty art in their own back or front yard? In this class we will research the history and present day creations of Outsider Art and even look at some examples in Boulder. To really experience this art form on the grounds of Horizons, we will create our own Outsider Art Tower modeled after the uncles’ towers in Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place. We will learn about people, even middle schoolers, who have stood up for what they think is right and made a change in their communities, the world, and their own lives. Come explore freedom of expression and OUTSIDER ART!
Stand Up for Veterans (6,7,8)
Cece and Gayle
Did you know: That over 42,000,000 men and women in the United States have served in the military since the American Revolution? And that right now, over 200,000 veterans are homeless on any given night? Don’t you think we should show our veterans how much we value their experiences by learning about them and supporting their needs? Join us as we make a commitment to support local veterans organizations through a whole class fundraising effort. Our plan is to be unconventional, creative and politically powerful. We’ll watch movies to discover how Hollywood portrays veterans. We’ll create radio broadcasts and photo essays about the veteran experience, make recycled war art, memorials, and ‘combat’ paper, as well as learn the meaning behind Veterans Day. We’ll interview veterans and participate in the national “Invite a Veteran to School Day” and if you wish, join us for a Veterans Vigil overnight. Ready to stand up for veterans?
EFAA (6,7,8)
Jim
Did you know EFAA (Emergency Family Assistance Association) has been helping families in Boulder County since 1918! They work with other human service organizations, schools, congregations and local police departments. EFAA provides food, financial assistance, emergency shelter and temporary housing for families in great need.
As one recipient of EFAA’s help said, “I can't begin to put into words the blessing you have been to myself and my family. I've never met anyone who is as hardworking, patient, loving, so generous and kind. In this day and age where so many people have so little time to help others in need, you seem to devote yourself to this very thing every day."
EFAA is able to do all this great work through donations of food, clothing, household goods and LOTS of volunteers! THEY WOULD LOVE YOUR HELP!!! If you would be interested in finding about how to help people right in your neighborhood, please join me as we learn about and help support EFAA!!!!
