Just in case you have an interest in learning more about how I strive to connect with kids, here is a website of a non-profit organization I belong to started by 2 beloved teachers, Traci and Jeff Bushnell (formally of Horizons, recently in Africa, starting a school), and a group of dedicated parents.
  
Dr. Brown discusses the importance of play in this wonderful book. I seek to embrace as much play as possible in our classroom.  A joyful learning environment, rather then being frivolous, actually nourishes our deepest selves - supporting growth, learning, connection and success.
  
Alfie Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behavior, education, and parenting. Topics include performance vs. learning, coercion vs. community, competition, rewarding/bribing students to learn and other such provocative topics.
  
Heather Forbes writes about choosing love over fear while dealing with and raising children who have been traumatized at some point in their lives. I appreciate Ms. Forbes message, as it is aligned with what I believe and seek to practice. By the way, there is a workshop coming here in Boulder for those who purchase the book (no extra cost). I will be there, as well as a few other teachers and parents from our school (September 24, 9-4:00).
