Douglas Johnson - Art Welcome back Parents. I'd like to introduce myself to all of High Peaks; my name is Douglas Johnson and I have enjoyed working as a BVSD Art teacher with students in grades K-12 for the 22 years. I have also been elected to the state organization, Colorado Art Educators Association as Vice President. This organization provides continuing education for art teachers, mentors new Art teachers and advocates for the Arts in schools. I have been involved in all aspects of art education from professional contacts with international artists like Joan Miro, Louise Nevelson and Sandy Skogland to our local Boulder artists. I have even gotten to hang out with a few writers like Maya Angelo, Kurt Vonnegut, and Nikki Giovanni. I like to know what the top level artists are doing/thinking and bring the concepts back to our class. I have worked on Standards since they were introduced about 18 years ago. I also enjoy bringing technology into our classroom |

I bring with me 13 years of teaching experience, a Masters Degree in Literacy from the University of Colorado, and four years of Reading Recovery training. The Core Knowledge curriculum is something that drew me to this school. I've spent the last five years teaching 3rd grade. Most of my free time is spent outdoors, hiking 14ers, road and mountain biking, camping, and telemark skiing and snowboarding. I love to see and experience the world and have spent time traveling 6 continents. My students know that I love the arts and dabble in oil painting, watercolors, pastels, Japanese silk painting, jewelry, and more. Eleven years ago I was drawn to the mountains and moved to Colorado to pursue my degree in teaching at the University of Colorado. Karen Weaver - ESL Teacher I am working part-time at High Peaks as the English Language Acquisition (ESL) teacher. I have worked for BVSD since 2001 as an Early Childhood Coordinator and ESL teacher. Before that, I was an ESL instructor at Michigan State University, for six years. I am excited to combine my Early Childhood, Elementary Education and ESL degrees to connect with a wide range of children. I am passionate about helping all children learn. I have also taught children in Haiti and Latin America and have seen that enhancing curiosity and perseverance are universal to success. I am excited to work with such an amazing community of parents, teachers and children at High Peaks. |
