 Greetings Students and Families!

Welcome to Ms. Dolph's Fifth Grade Website!

 Upcoming Events

- February 4th, HP Pancake Breakfast at Applebee's, 7:30 - 9:30 a.m.

 Science

In mid-January student will begin a three week unit on Chemistry: Matter and Change.  This unit builds off the chemistry unit students had in fourth grade.  We will be reading sections of the textbook Science Explorer:  Chemical Building Blocks, by Prentice Hall, as well as magazines from National Geographic Explorer and Kids Discover.  Students will practice the Scientific Method as they do demonstrations and experiments, working in small groups.  This will give students hands on practice to deepen their understanding of this unit and provide preparation for Science Fair, which will be held on April 18th and 19th, 2012.

We will not be limiting the students' Science Fair topic selection to Chemistry this year.  They can choose from any of the science disciplines listed on the Science Fair Packet, which will be going home soon.

Chemistry Big Ideas: ~ Everything around you is matter.  ~ All matter is made up of elements, the smallest unit of which is an atom.  ~ Elements are described by their properties and composition.

 Social Studies

This month, we will be exploring the ancient cultures of the Inca, Maya, and Aztec.  Central and South American geography will accompany this unit as we learn about these historically rich and advanced cultures.

 Reading

The next novel that students will be reading is The Secret Garden, by Francis Hodgson Burnett.

 Everyday Mathematics

Unit 6 in Everyday Mathematics gives students practice with organizing and interpreting data, along with the addition and subtraction of fractions.  Students will learn to use data from surveys to begin using stem-and-leaf plots and investigate the effect of sample size.  Also, students will learn to read and use contour maps that show climate and growing season data.  We will also be revisiting the addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators.

 Writing

This month we began the new year reading and creating poetry.  We will analyze the Core Knowledge poets and poetry that are recommended for fifth grade.  Students will use these poems as models to create their own work.  Also this month, students will be responding to the winter writing prompt and beginning persuasive essays.

 Geography

World Geography will be our focus after winter break as we learn about Mesoamerica and European Exploration.
