Mesa School Committees
The Problem Solving Team (PST) is part of the Student Support Process at Mesa Elementary. The purpose of this team is to brainstorm interventions for students struggling with academics or behavior that can be tried in the general education classroom. This team is comprised of a group of general education teachers skilled in differentiation and supported by the Special Education team as needed.
PST Primary and Intermediate teams meet on alternating weeks. Both teams seek to collaborate with parents to develop supports for individual children in the classroom. A student may be referred to the PST Team by his or her classroom teacher or parents. Before an initial meeting, the classroom teacher and parents of the struggling student are asked to fill out background information on the student that guides the conversation at the meeting. At a PST meeting, these documents are referred to when developing a desired standards-based outcome. After interventions have been brainstormed, a timeline is put in place to monitor the intervention. A follow-up meeting is always scheduled as well, and at this meeting the team discusses the student’s successes or challenges and brainstorms additional interventions if needed.
