**Dear students, Thank you to everyone for participating in our study of Dia de los Muertos. It can be an especially difficult unit because you are asked to think about your own cultural traditions and beliefs surrounding the death of a loved one while we look at the Latin American traditions and beliefs. I am proud of your work in this unit as it took courage and a big heart to understand more deeply this thing called life. Sincerely, Dona G.***

Use this research to your advantage, study 15-20 minutes each day, even Monday morning. Good luck!
La tarea para el veinte y cuatro al veinte y ocho de octubre
This week we will begin our study of the Latin Amercian holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We will be discussing the cultural perspectives of death in our country and within each family culture as well as in Latin America. I encourage students and parents to dialogue about family and personal perpectives of death and about Día de los Muertos. This study typically brings up new questions and sometimes sorrow, although the focus is on celebrating the life, not the death, of those who have passed on. If you would like to learn more about Day of the Dead, there are many resources at the Boulder Library and on-line. At the end of the week and on Tuesday November 1st (the actual day), we will create/simulate a traditional Día de los Muertos celebration in our class with food and a memorial or ofrenda for los muertos. Students are encouraged to bring in an item and a photo to honor someone who has passed away- a family member, a family pet, or a historial icon who has touched their lives in some way. Students may volunteer to bring in traditional food for the celebration on Tuesday November 1st. Recipes will be available in class.

Country Connections Research Project
La semana del tres de octubre al siete
Students, you have been working hard on your presentation of research. During this two week project, you have been introduced to research, how to find information for citations, how to use a variety of resources for research, how to cite and notate information, how to create a "digital poster" and coordinate it with a verbal presentation, how to present collaboratively, how to give constructive feedback, AND you learned all about Spanish-speaking countries.
This Wednesday, we are going to celebrate our hard work and learnings with a food day. Students are invited to find a recipe from the country which they studied, prepare it, and bring it in to share. The portions do not need to be meal size, rather "taste test" size. Sometimes students choose to gather together at one house to cook the food, other times students prepare the food at their individual homes.
Students, cut the food ahead of time and bring it in with a serving utensil. It is helpful if your name is on the dishes and utensils because then I can send it to the appropriate home. Microwaves and refrigerators are available. Plates, silverware, cups, and napkins will be provided. THANK YOU for contributing to our celebrations!

Dear Beginning Spanish Students,
¡Bienvenidos, welcome to my web site! This is the section for Beginning Spanish, above you will see the Spanish 1 window. The orange-red title at the top of this window translates as ¨Beginning Spanish¨. Here you will find nightly homework assignments and to the right, a photo relating to our unit of study. The window below has links to recommended study sites and resources, such as an on-line dictionary. The course overview and policies are also found on this web site. If I need to send out a message to all my students, I will post it here.
Shortly, this section will be only in Spanish, as is the rest of the web site. Fret not, no worries, together we will assure that you can read and understand the page. Remember, you can always ask a classmate or use the dictionary for support.
Below I´ve posted the homework for this week, followed by a supply list for reference.
Welcome again. I look forward to getting to know each of you and speaking Spanish with you. Here´s to a year full of learning and joy.
Doña Gloria

viernes (Friday): no homework over the weekend
SUPPLIES
1. A 3-ring binder with pockets inside the front cover and five dividers: Using dividers, create five sections and write the following in Spanish on the front side of the label (it is your choice to write the English on the back of the label as a resource):
ü Lotería (en inglés: bingo)
ü Canciones (en inglés: songs)
ü Gramática (en inglés: grammar)
ü Hojas de practica (en inglés: practice sheets)
ü Pruebas/Exámenes (en inglés: quizzes/exams)
Binders, with the dividers set-up and labeled, are due in class on Thursday, August 18th.
Remember to label the dividers in 100% Spanish, using the list as a reference.
2. A composition book: Keep this in the inside pockets of your three ring binder.
3. Texbook ¡En Español 1!. Each student will be loaned a personal copy of the textbook to keep and use at home. Students are responsible for returning the textbook in the same condition that they receive it.
4. Workbook. It is required that each student purchase the corresponding workbook upon registration. I will give you the workbook in class and it is yours to keep. You must bring it to class EVERY day, whether or not we use it. Previous Beginning Spanish students recommend that you keep it clipped into the three rings of your binder.
5. A pencil and a green pen. Bring a pencil and a green pen to class EVERY day. Please do not do schoolwork in marker, sparkly pens or other ‘cute’ writing utensils. They are not erasable and are difficult to read. Save them for projects!
6. Dry erase markers. Bring one or more dry erase/whiteboard markers to class EVERY day.
7. Notecards. Use these notecards to make flashcards. We will learn a variety of study games and techniques using flashcards. Keep some of these at home and in your locker.
8. Dictionary. Though not mandatory, this is a helpful resource to have at home when students wish to be creative. The pocket size version of Langenscheidt Spanish/English Dictionary is very good. It costs about $10.00. We have dictionaries available for student use at school, thus, students may keep their personal dictionaries at home (unless, of course, one chooses to carry it around in their pocket for quick and frequent referencing).
