El proyecto final: Show and Tell
The project is due Thursday, May 23rd. All students must be ready to present on the due date (unless individually arranged otherwise). Your classmates and I will have four class periods and one office hour to work together on this project. There will be two and a half class periods of writing workshops to guide your writing topics, styles, and grammar. The other one and half classes will focus on the verbal presentation skills and practice.
You will have 7 nights to work independently and /or with study partners on the project. Homework directly related to the project will be assigned to help pace your preparation.

A. Escuchar
a. Listen in class, watch cheesy videos on the CD-ROM, be an active listener while we complete in class listening activities.
b. The number one way to improve your listening is to always ask ‘¿Qué quiere decir…?’ the moment you hear a word you don´t recognize.
B. Leer
a. You already practiced for this section by reading an article about ‘El beísbol’ in the textbook. There are more articles to practice with on pages 184-85 and 228-31.
b. When you practice reading, read the article outloud in Spanish, keeping your eye out for words you don´t recognize. Then, look up a few of the words. Finally, read the article word for word in English, again identifying words you don´t recognize.
c. Studying vocabulary lists will also help you prepare for this section as well as Vocabulario y gramática.

La celebración de Día de los Muertos
Dear Parents and Students,
Monday we will begin our preparations for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Friday we will create a traditional Día de los Muertos celebration in our class with food and a memorial or ofrenda (alter) for los muertos (the dead or as we refer to them in class people who have passed). Some links to information about this celebration is posted below.
We will be discussing the cultural perspectives of death in our country and México as well as the differences between the holidays of Halloween and Day of the Dead. Students are encouraged to bring in a photo of someone who has passed and an item symbolizing what that person loved while alive or one that reminds the student of that person. The person may be a family member, family pet, a figure in history, a deceased literary or art figure, or anyone who has touched their lives in some way. Also on Friday, November 2nd, students are invited to bring in traditional food for the celebration such as pan de muertos (Day of the Dead bread) or sweet pumpkin. I will share some mole and Mexican hot chocolate. Students who play instruments are encouraged to bring them and play at the celebration.
I hope our simulations and study of this holiday inspire conversations at home.

lunes: practice pronouncing nationalities. Use the "country song" (that's not a country song but a song with countries in the lyrics) as a reference sheet with the nationalities listed in the lyrics. Say them fast, say them slow, say the word three times in a row. Watch yourself in a mirror, smile, you are beautiful just the way you are...speaking Spanish!
martes: Tomorrow there is a quiz on the lyrics from the birthday song and the Adams family song. Study...this might look like you singing the song to your family, to your dog, to yourself in a mirror, sing yourself to sleep:).
