Persuasive Literary Analysis Essay

Your goal for the weekend is to work on your body paragraphs.  In particular, focus on evidence, including introducing it and elaborating on it.  Make sure your paragraphs have topic sentences as well, but these don't have to be perfect.  Just something as simple as "Kino is impulsive" will work for now.

On Monday, come in with a hard copy of your body paragraphs.  We will do some in-class work on topic sentences and thesis statements in the beginning of next week.

On Tuesday, come in with a hard copy of your body paragraphs with your topic sentences in good shape.

Complete numbers 1-6 on the checklist and update your essay.  On Wednesday, come to class with a hard copy of your new and much improved essay.

"How Much Land Does a Man Need?"

To read the story, click on the link below:

HowMuchLand.html

Please read this story by Monday the 17th and answer the worksheet questions.  If you do not have a copy of the questions, they are on the windowsill in my room.

Essay Plan of Action

Please complete numbers 1-4 on the essay plan of action sheet for tomorrow, Tuesday.  Make sure that you fill in the worksheet designated for you and the outline.  The outline is worth 8 points. It does not have to be perfect, but it should be filled out to the best of your ability.  I will be meeting with you individually to go over your outline.

Free Write

On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following question:

What can YOU learn from The Pearl?  Your answer can be any length you wish; however, it needs to reflect real effort and thought.  Think deeply about what you can take away from this novella.  Go beyond "don't be greedy."  That can be a start, but not the whole answer.  Think: in what ways am I, my family or our society in general sometimes driven by greed (desire for more money, bigger houses, etc, etc)

Socratic Seminar Worksheet is due Thursday; be sure to come up with 3 of your own questions!!

Fairytale final draft is due Friday

Make sure your newest draft is stapled to the front of the packet that came back to you on Friday.

If you had a language exercise sheet stapled to your packet, this is the order for stapling:  a) Your sheet with sentences pulled out ("Improving our Fairytales"), b) The final and updated draft, c) The rest of the packet.

I MAY NOT TAKE YOUR STORY UNLESS YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE PACKET STAPLED TOGETHER AND READY TO GO BEFORE CLASS BEGINS!  PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE AND ORGANIZED!

*See me if you need help revising your story*

Please read Chapter 6 by tomorrow (Tuesday).  Be ready for a reading quiz sometime this week.

2. Why does Juana return the pearl to Kino even when she has the chance to throw it into the sea?

Vocabulary

When you are finished, save, print, and staple your document. This assignment is worth 30 points.

Your assignment should look like this:

1. a. Amiable: adj. having or showing agreeable personal qualities; pleasant; affable. 2 friendly, sociable. 3. agreeable; willing to accept the wishes, decisions, or suggestions of another.

b. Jack is an amiable boy, for he always says, "Good morning, Ms. Rabinovich," when she sees him in the hallway.
