Benefits of Dual Language Instruction
Students develop fluency in a second language. The “window of opportunity” for easily learning a second language closes early. Elementary-aged students are like sponges, subconsciously soaking up vocabulary and syntax. Students who acquire languages at an early age are more likely to sound like native speakers. They also find it easier to learn additional languages.
Students develop strong communication skills. For children, learning a second language is natural, but also academically stimulating. During the process of language acquisition, students develop stronger listening and speaking skills. As students’ bilingualism develops, they gain confidence and a sense of empowerment--qualities which lead to more effective communication.
Students gain career advantages. Individuals who can communicate fluently in more than one language have increased opportunities in our global economy. There is great demand for bilingual employees in business, health care, government, education, communications, and technical fields.
Students gain a lifetime of enriched experiences. People who are bicultural/biliterate can more fully participate in our global society. Because they respect and appreciate diversity, they can build stronger relationships with people from different backgrounds. Knowing other languages and being familiar with diverse cultures allows people to experience their communities--local and global--on a deeper level and in a more positive way.
Students perform better in school. Research shows that students in dual-language programs experience increased achievement, higher scores on standardized tests, and more positive attitudes toward school.
