All of us are keenly aware of the issues faced by the tragedy in New Orleans and the surrounding area due to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.  As an educational institution, we are sensitive to the plight faced by children uprooted from their communities and schools.  I know many of us have contributed in a variety of ways to help victims and their families for which I am most appreciative.  I am now making you aware of how we may assist as a district.

            In listening to comments from staff, parents, and members of our community, I have been asked how we as a district can assist the children impacted by this tragedy.  An excellent suggestion from a member of our District Parent Council was to contact the Houston Independent School District as it struggles to meet the educational needs of the over 10,000 children being relocated to their city.  I contacted officials with HISD and they stated that their most critical need is cash donations. This will allow the district to purchase whatever is most urgently needed.

            Should you, your school, department, or parent organization wish to assist in this effort, please forward a check made out to the Boulder Valley School District and note in the memo line – Katrina Evacuee Relief Fund – to my office at P.O. Box 9011, Boulder, CO. 80301.  We will collect this money and send it to the Houston Independent School District.
