Ryan Math and Science Focus School

2nd Annual Fitness Challenge

A Coordinated School Health Event

In conjunction with the Ryan PTA, Centaurus High School, Lafayette Parks and Recreation, and Exempla Hospital

Whether you are 6 years old or 60, you can test your fitness in trials of speed, strength and endurance.

Adults and children ages 6 and up compete in five to seven athletic tests (see list below) and are scored based on their national percentile within their age group. These scores are then averaged to get an overall score.

Cost:  This is a free event, open to the public!

Time & Place:
Events begin at 9 a.m on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Ryan Math and Science Focus School, with all participants finishing by 11:30. The mile and 100-meter dash will take place on the Centaurus High School track after the events at Ryan, and all other events will be held inside in Ryan’s gym. Ryan Elementary Math and Science Focus School is located at 1405 Centaur Village Drive, off of South Boulder Road in Lafayette, Co.  Ryan is about a ¼ mile south of Centaurus High School.

Ryan Fitness Challenge Events:

  • One Minute Curl-Ups - Arms crossed with hands on opposite shoulders. Touch elbows to knees, then shoulder blades to the ground.
  • Shuttle Run - Two wooden blocks are 30' away. Grab the first one and place it behind the start line, grab the second one and sprint for home.
  • Mile Run - Take four laps on the Centaurus track to see if you can best Roger Bannister.
  • 100-Meter Dash - At the sound of the gun explode out of the blocks and sprint to the tape.
  • Pull-Ups - As many as you can muster with no time limit. Palms face away from you. Ladies will do the timed flexed arm hang instead.
  • Vertical Leap - Reach from the ground to get your starting point, then take three tries to see how tall of a building you can leap. One foot stays planted while the other can take one step.
  • One Minute Push-Ups - Full extension to 3" above the ground. Ladies can use their knees.
  • Sit & Stretch - Not scored for the Ryan Fitness Challenge, but you can see how you measure up. 15" from your toes is the starting point.

You will have the choice of which order to complete your events. Starting at 9:00 a.m., the mile run and 100 meter dash will begin at the CHS track at  around 10:45 am.

The President's Fitness Challenge:

Students age 6 to 17 can participate in the President's Challenge with five events. Students are welcome to choose the adult Ryan Fitness Challenge instead, but must use the 'under 20' age percentiles.

  • One Minute Curl-Ups
  • Shuttle Run
  • Sit & Reach
  • One Mile Run (1/4 or ½ mile runs for ages 6-9)
  • Pull-ups (Flexed arm hang option for girls)

Scoring:

Events are scored based on The Cooper Institute's age and gender norms and the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey used by the President's Challenge. All scores are averaged for an overall score. Tie breakers for the overall winners go to the athletes with the most head to head event wins.

To participate in this fun and fitness filled event, you must have a parent present during the events.  Parents may help by monitoring an event, timing participants, or helping with scoring.  Parents are encouraged to participate in the Ryan Fitness Challenge!  We will need your help as a volunteer if you choose not to compete.
