Why Focus on Math and Science? Modern society is a technological work of wonder. We bank without entering a bank, communicate without paper or even wires, understand more each day about the smallest quark and the largest universe, and live longer, healthier lives all because of math and science. These wonders are also placing increasing demands upon our society. Members of our workforce need to solve real-world problems, analyze complex information and use modern technology. Employment opportunities abound but having the proper background is requisite. Parents in the district, understanding this, asked the BVSD to create a math and science focused school where students would receive a full-curriculum education including literacy, the arts, and social sciences with additional emphasis on math and science. On a state level, the Colorado Department of Education declared 2004-2005 school year the Year of Math and the 2005-2006 school year the Year of Science. Nationwide, scientists and businesses alike are realizing the importance of math and science. The need for strong math and science programs is a topic of much discussion throughout the nation. “In this changing world, those who understand and can do mathematics will have significantly enhanced opportunities and options for shaping their futures. Mathematical competence opens doors to productive futures.” Principals and Standards of School Mathematics (2000)
“To maintain our country’s competitiveness in the 21st century, we must cultivate the skilled scientists and engineers needed to create tomorrow’s innovations. To remain the technological leader in the 21st century, we must establish and achieve an ambitious goal: We must double today’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates by 2015.” Tapping America’s Potential- Business Rountable (2005)
