Dear Families,
A recent Daily Camera newspaper article referenced Ryan
Math and Science Focus School and our status as a targeted
school which receives smaller class size allocations in the
primary grades. I wanted to let parents know that while the
article speaks to a recommendation by the school district
administrators that another school has surpassed our needs
and we should not receive the smallest class size designation,
the school board has just recently received this recommendation
and as yet has not acted upon it. Changes in class-sizes at
Ryan and other schools have not yet been determined.
As the principal
here at Ryan, I am hopeful that the district
will create a class size situation that recognizes the needs of
our students. Students and staff at Ryan Math and Science
Focus School have created a lot of momentum for significant
learning this year. We want to keep that ball rolling and to
this end the School Improvement Team and the PTA will
work to ensure that students learning and appropriate resource
allocation go hand in hand. Respectful dialogue around the
resource allocation issues the school district is facing will be
an important component of budgetary situations.
Our School
Improvement Team was well represented by SIT
member and parent Bret Elliot a few weeks ago in the district
budget hearings. We met with Superintendent Dr. George
Garcia and members of his cabinet. They heard Ryan’s
proposals for the budget, along with our suggestions for class
size numbers. Our SIT and PTA groups along with staff at
Ryan will keep you up to date on happenings in this arena.
Thanks for your continued support as we seek to maximize
resources while providing outstanding learning opportunities
for our children.
