CLOUT -
Coalition for Learning Opportunities and United Tutors Program
The CLOUT Program is an after school reading and hands-on science program for
fourth grade students sponsored by NREL - National Renewable Energy
Laboratory. The program is a science literacy enhancement tool that assists
fourth grade students in raising their science reading skills. Volunteers
provide "one-on-one" tutoring on a weekly basis throughout the school year.
The intent of CLOUT is to combine reading with related hands-on science
activities to help improve students reading comprehension and help retain
their interest in science.
Ryan is one of six new schools trying the CLOUT Program this year, bringing
the total number os schools to 15. Currently Ryan and only one other BVSD
school are enrolled. We would really lke to see if we can give the program a
try and see how it will benefit the students.
Letters have gone out to certain fourth grade students that qualify for this
program, which starts after school at Ryan on Sept. 19th and runs every
Tuesday. Janet Stellema, Ryan's Math and Science Coordinator, and the PTA are
looking for adult volunteers that are interested in becoming a tutor and can
commit to a student every Tuesday. The program will have up to 10 students, so
we are needing up to 10 volunteers. If interested, please contact Janet
Stellema at janet.stellema@bvsd.org
or Debbie Quinn at
rockymtnbrat@hotmail.com.
Original Works Program
Ryan and the PTA are looking for someone to help Helen Trajtenberg, the Art
teacher, with the Original Works program. We have already been talking with
Helen and the coordinator from Original Works so things are in progress. The
volunteers would need to help Helen with sending out the artwork and forms to
parents, collect money and forms back, and then distribute the finished gifts.
This wouldn't require a lot of time. If you are interested, please let Debbie
Quinn (rockymtnbrat@hotmail.com,
720-519-0421) or Helen know. Thank you for supporting the Art department with
this project.

Day. Join fellow students and show how exercise is important for staying
healthy.
Back To School Staff Luncheon
The luncheon for the staff is being held on August 23, 2006. If you would like
to help with donating food, set-up or clean-up, please contact Marla Leonard @
720-352-5970 for more details.
First Day Back At School
Welcome back students! The first day of school is August 24, 2006. Please
remember to help get your students organized, make sure they have their school
supplies, and allow a little extra time to get to school the first few days.
Please remember to not park in drop off zones. There are lots of parents
attempting to drop off students and parked cars can cause unloading problems.
Back To School Night
Back to School Night is scheduled for August 29, 2006. If you can help out
with bringing some snacks or water, please contact Debbie Quinn @
720-519-0421. Jim Armitage will be giving an overview of the school and
procedures and what to expect with the upcoming year. The new PTA board will
be presenting lots of great info. Don’t miss this event. PTA and neighboring
community businesses will have informational tables to help answer any
question you might have.
Skate Night
Ryan will be hosting a Skate Night at Skate City in Westminster. Flyers will
be sent home in Friday folders on August 25, 2006 with more details. For each
person skating, Ryan will get a percentage of the proceeds. Come out for a
night of fun and help support the PTA’s goals for this year.
