Message from Doris Candelarie

Message from Our Incoming Principal

Dear Sanchez Community,

I am thrilled to have been selected as the new principal of Sanchez Elementary!    I was impressed with the dedication of staff and parents to the hiring process and appreciate all the time and care that was taken to make the selection.  I assure you I will work hard to meet your expectations.

Over the next two months I will be closing a significant book in my life, transitioning from twenty-two years in Brighton School District 27J.  While I am anxious to get started, I still have considerable responsibilities in 27J and many projects yet to finish before the end of the school year.  I will be able to spend a half day each week and a few full days this spring learning about Sanchez, planning for next year, and getting to know all of you.

I am looking forward to meeting all the children especially the 5th graders who wrote wonderful letters to the Superintendent, Dr. Garcia telling him what kind of principal they thought Sanchez needed.  When children invest time into something, such as writing persuasive letters, I think it is important for them to know that someone read the letters and there is a direct response.  Unfortunately a few students will be disappointed; they wrote that they wanted a “boy” principal.  But most students wrote that they wanted someone who was caring and who liked kids.  I definitely meet that request!

Before the end of the school year I will be hosting an informal gathering to meet the parent community, please look for that announcement in future communications.  If you would like to make an appointment to visit with me personally, I will be available at the school beginning July 30, 2007.

Sincerely,

Doris Candelarie

Sanchez Wins Rising Star Award!

Our Nano Dragons academic team recently won the "Rising Star" award at BVSD's recent Lego Robotics Challenge.  Our eight students competed throughout the day with a PowerPoint presentation that "awed the judges."  We earned seventh place overall in a field of twenty three other teams with a variety of age groups with an a student taking home the only Junior FIRST award given out during the competition.

Community

The students, teachers, parents and staff at Alicia Sanchez Elementary spent Friday, May 11th, putting into practice what they have been learning all year; growing and building a community spirit. Through a grant written by fifth grade teacher, Grant Swift, and school counselor, Carl Sanchez, the school received funding from Lowe's to plant the berms surrounding Sanchez Elementary.

The fifth grade students did much of the work, helping the other grades with their areas. Fifth graders spent last week teaching each grade level 'how to' plant their gardens. Then each grade level was assigned a team of fifth graders to assist in the actual planting.

Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Swift chose plants that were native to our area, making the berms relatively easy to maintain, and drought resistant. The berms were mapped out and assigned to each class. Then the classes were able to choose the plants that would be planted in their 'gardens'.

What looked like a day of chaos, was actually a well choreographed day of community 'team-building' and cooperation. And the result , is a beautiful new face-lift for Sanchez Elementary that the Sanchez community can be proud of.
