I grew up in Michigan with my parents and two sisters. My parents were research chemists. It made for a fun, if somewhat quirky, childhood. My parents always encouraged us to think for ourselves, try new things and constantly reach for new knowledge. It is a great attitude that I have tried to pass on to my sons.

My husband Hans, and I have two sons, Peter and Christian. Christian is working on a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Peter is starting on his PhD in History. Hans is the director of data and policy for a professional organization of state university presidents and governing boards.

We have lived in Colorado, Seattle and Hawai’i. We are fortunate to still have a cottage in Waimea. It makes for wonderful vacations! My family loves to travel. We have visited numerous national parks; hiked on fresh lava; walked around the Tower of London and Stonehenge; kayaked in the Puget Sound; climbed into caves created by ocean waves; walked on a 150 year old ship; hiked in rainforests with huge, ancient trees; toured the Louvre in Paris; flew around Mt. McKinley and visited so many more places. When we aren’t traveling we enjoy music, cooking, reading, entertaining and spending time with family.

I began teaching in the Boulder Valley School District in 1993. My first 3 years were spent teaching at Coal Creek Elementary School in Louisville. In 1997, I transferred to Superior. I love the magic of 1st grade. The children who look so little on the first day of school quickly grow into independent, thoughtful, excited learners. The growth – both physical and educational – that occurs during 1st Grade is tremendous. It is a joy sharing that time with such bright and enthusiastic people.
