SECOND GRADE HANDBOOK
Dear Superior Second Grade Parents,
After a restful and
relaxing summer, we are pleased to welcome you to second grade at Superior
Elementary School. In an effort to provide a positive communication link between school and home, we have created this handbook for your information. Our hope is that the policies and information provided in this book will create a greater cooperation and understanding between parents and school. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to call, email, write us a note.
We are glad to have you and your family with us at Superior Elementary. As always, we look forward to a successful year for our team of students, parents, teachers, and staff.
Sincerely,

You will receive a newsletter every other Friday in your child's "Friday Folder". This newsletter highlights class activities over the course of a week and will give you just enough information to enable you to ask your child a question about school that will hopefully get more than an "I played" or a "nothin'" response. Please use the newsletter to find out what we've been doing and learning in second grade.
Friday Folders
As often as possible, your child's work will be sent home on Friday's in a school folder. Please review the work and return the empty
folder as soon as possible.
Report Cards/Conferences
We will send report cards home three times throughout the year as well
as meet for formal conferences twice.
You will be receiving a yearly curriculum plan, which
explains the content and skills we will be teaching this year.
The purpose
of homework is to reinforce skills taught at school. If good study habits are established early, your child will learn the importance of time management, organization, and responsibility in the learning process.
Parents may best help by encouraging and praising efforts made by the child. Please help your child 1) set aside a consistent
time for completing homework and 2) choose a quiet work place. Also, be sure that a pencil is used for all written assignments unless otherwise stated.
Our school homework policy is 10 minutes per grade level per night i.e. (2x 10 min.-= 20 min.), in addition to reading 15 minutes each night.
A homework packet will be sent home each Friday and is due back the following Thursday. Homework requirements for second grade include:
-
Reading
- Students are responsible for reading 15 minutes or more each day. This may include silent reading, oral reading to a friend/family member, or listening to a story.
- Students are expected to fill out a record sheet after each reading.
- A list of helpful hints to support young readers will be handed out at Back to School Night.
- Content Area Homework
- Students are responsible to complete various science, social studies, math, and/or language arts activities and projects.
- Spelling
- Students will receive their spelling words on Friday. A spelling test will be given the following Friday. A more detailed explanation will be provided at Back to School Night along with a list of fun activities to help your child study his/her words.
- Students are expected to complete the spelling packet each week to help reinforce skills and practice the words.
- Math Facts
- Students will be given a timed test (Beat-the-Clock) to practice and assess their knowledge of facts. It is important to practice these facts because they are tools to aid the development of mathematical concepts. Early September we will send home ideas to make this a fun time for all!
To ensure all children have an equal opportunity to learn, we expect children to be good listeners, follow directions, stay on task, and be respectful of others.
Positive reinforcement will be used to encourage appropriate behavior such as earning "good thing" string links, stickers, Superior Kid Awards etc.
However, we will adhere to the Superior Elementary School Discipline
Policy when necessary.
We will take 1 bus and 2 car fields trips this year- the
Arvada Center
, Superior Community place, and
NCAR.
In addition, some walking trips may be taken in the Rock Creek neighborhood or
Superior
area. We will send home notes describing the trip ahead of time and requesting parent permission to participate. A student is never eliminated from participating based on financial reasons. Frequently parents are invited to attend the trip as volunteer helpers. If you prefer that your child not attend a field trip, alternative academic activities will be provided for him/her within the school environment. Students are not excused from school when such a situation occurs.
Each week your child will write you a letter in a special letter notebook. We ask that you respond each week by writing a letter back to your child and return it to school the following week.
Each week we will choose a student to be our "Special K". This student will take home a bag containing a letter to parents and a special book on Friday. The student may collect 5 things to share with the class (1 a day) and place them in the bag. No pets are allowed at school. Only pictures of the critters, please!. Your
child will also be responsible for decorating an "All about Me" poster and collecting at least 5 pictures to share with the class that week.
Each week one student will be responsible for taking home our class estimation jar on Friday and returning the jar on Monday full of objects that the class can estimate. More information will be provided when it's your child's turn to have the jar.
Each week one student will be given the opportunity to bring our class "Traveling Teddy" home for a week. Your child will be expected to write about his experiences with your child that week. More information will be provided when
your child brings home the bear.
Students are provided a snack break during morning recess. Please send a small, healthy, easy-to-eat snack of nutritional value.
Students will visit the library, as a class, one time per week for story
and checkout time. Your child will be issued his/her own library card at the beginning of the year. There is a 25-cent fee to replace a lost card. Students are responsible for the cost of replacing any books that are lost when checked out in their name. Parents will be notified periodically of overdue books.
Children are invited to celebrate their birthdays at school. If they wish to bring brownies, cookies, stickers, etc., please send these in at the beginning of the day and we will make time to celebrate. Because of time constraints, we would greatly appreciate your keeping the treats small, simple to serve, not too messy or sugary. If any paper products are needed, please be sure to send them with the treats. For those students whose birthday occurs during the summer months, we will be assigning "un-birthdays" later in the year.
If your child is
having an "at home" birthday party, PLEASE DO NOT send invitations to school
for your child to pass out. Unless, all children are invited. This procedure will avoid many hurt feelings. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
We will have 4 class parties throughout the year (Halloween, Winter Break, Valentine's Day, and End of the Year). Party Chair and Co-Chair parents will be contacting volunteers to provide snacks, paper goods and/or assistance. In addition to holiday parties, we will also be having "learning Celebrations" such as the Heritage Festival and Australian Outback food tasting Corroboree.
For those of you who wish to volunteer in the classroom and/or at home, a training session will be provided mid-September. If you wish to volunteer, you may sign-up for positions during our Back-to-School information night on September 14th.
If your child is late for school, he/she must report to the office. If your student will not be in school for a day or more, a note or phone call to the office is greatly appreciated. Each absence is followed by a phone call by the attendance secretary. Your child's welfare is always our concern.
A great deal of class work
involves hands-on materials and experiences. Therefore, it is difficult to send work home with the child. Students absent from school due to a family vacation can read daily, write in their journals, and/or practice math facts.
At the beginning of each month we will send home several book orders. You are NOT obligated to buy any books. The prices are quite reasonable and
most of the selections are good. When ordering, please enclose the order form and a check made out to the book company on the form in a sealed envelope with your child's name. Orders go home on Fridays and are due back the following Wednesday. Books will be sent home with the child within a day of being received at school. We welcome any book donations to add to the class library.
To avoid many items from being lost, we encourage you to label all personal items your child brings
to school. However, if your child does lose an item he/she may check our classroom and school lost and found. If your child accidentally brings home something that doesn't belong to him/her, please help your child remember to return it to school.
Any student who has
forgotten their lunch or money, may charge that day. The cashier, will stamp the back of the student's hand as a reminder that money should be sent the next day.
If a student wishes
to buy a hot lunch and does not care for the entree choice(s), he/she can
choose a peanut butter sandwich. The student will receive the rest of the regular lunch as well as milk.
If you wish to join your child for lunch, please let us know ahead of time so we order a lunch for you.
It is unwise for students to bring money to school. When
money is needed for some goods or services being offered by the school, the
students should bring the money in a sealed envelope or a secure coin purse. This will save many tears. Labeling envelopes will also add to the security of getting money to its intended location.
Toys and other valuables tend to distract the learning of students. For this reason, they should remain at home (except for
Special K week).
Children are expected to be dressed appropriately for school. Please be aware of our changeable weather and prepare children accordingly.
Please note our class weekly schedule. On the days we have P.E., it is wise for children to wear or bring tennis shoes. It is advisable for girls to wear
shorts under any dress.
