Peace Place

To help children develop positive social and independent problem solving skills, students are encouraged to use the PEACE PLACE located in their classroom or specialty room, on the playground or in the cafeteria. All students are taught these steps:

  1. Review ground rules (agree to solve the problem, take turns talking, no put downs, tell the truth).

  2. Each person states an I Message
    (“I feel ____ when you ____ because ____.”).

  3. Each person states a Need Message
(“I need you to ____ and say you’re sorry.”)

  4. Each person suggests a win-win solution
(“Maybe next time we could ____.”)

  5. Shake hands and thank the person for working it out.

While PEACE PLACE is not the solution to all problem situations, it is helpful resolving small conflicts before they turn into larger problems. Students are encouraged to independently follow these steps, but may request adult facilitation of the Peace Place process.
