How to Read the Second Grade Report Card

While most of you are familiar with the district report cards, there are a few questions that often come up. Here are some answers to the most often asked questions. As always, you can find even more information on our 2nd grade website (ses2ndgrade.com).

2nd Grade Report Card FAQ:

• Are the grades based on end of the year goals or end of the 1st trimester goals? The scores given are not a cumulative score over the first trimester, but a snap shot of what your child is able to do at this point in the year. The scores on the report card reflect where students are in relation to where they should be in order for them to successfully meet the end of the year standard.

• Where can I find the standards for the whole year? The yellow colored folders have the highlights of the standards for the full year. The folders are for you to keep at home for reference.

• How often are “4”s used on grades? We do not use “4” very often. Those are for children who have made an exceptional amount of progress and significantly exceed the standard.

• What is the difference between the trimester progress grade and the standard based grade? The trimester progress score shows the rate of progress shown during the trimester. The report card uses a letter for the progress grade (see the top of the report card). For example, a child could be below grade level at the start of the trimester and make a huge amount of growth nd get an “E” score – even though the student might still be below grade level. In comparison, a child could be a high reader who makes only a moderate amount of growth in the trimester. That child would get a “V” to indicate the amount of change. It is the rate of growth that is indicated.
