Fun and Creative Ways to Study Spelling Words

(instead of writing them 5 times each!)

  • Type the spelling words on a typewriter or computer.
  • Spell the words with “Scrabble” or “Boggle” game tiles/cubes.
  • Write the spelling words in alphabetical order.
  • Make a crossword puzzle or word search using the spelling words.
  • Write the spelling words using stencil letters.
  • Write the spelling words in white Elmer’s glue. After it dries, feel the letters with your fingers. Practice saying and spelling your words.
  • Write the spelling words in white Elmer’s glue. After it dries, put a piece of paper over it and rub a crayon over the bumpy letters. Practice saying and spelling them.
  • Write the words in white Elmer’s glue. Sprinkle sand, salt, or glitter on and let it dry. Feel the letters and practice saying and spelling your words.
  • Write each of the words in a sentence. Underline each word.
  • Cut out letters from magazines to make your spelling words.
  • Write the spelling words with your finger in the air or on your desk. See if a friend can guess what the word is.
  • Play tic-tac-toe with a friend. Your friend asks you a spelling word. If you spell it correct, you get to make an X or O in the game. If you are incorrect, you loose a turn.
  • Write the spelling words on a dry erase board.
  • Find the spelling words in a dictionary and write down the definition of each word.
  • Form the spelling words using clay or playdough.
  • Form the spelling words using yarn or string.
  • Using flattened clay, write the spelling words in the clay using a pencil or toothpick.
  • Write a story using your spelling words. Use as many words as you can, but make sure it makes sense. Underline the words.
  • Play hangman using the spelling words.
  • Using crayons, colored pencils, or markers, print the words. Use a different color to represent the different sound(s) or vowel you might by practicing.
  • Write the spelling words in sand or salt sprinkled on a cookie sheet.
  • Write the words using the rules below.
    • make all the vowel you hear in a red crayon.
    • make all vowels that are silent in blue crayon.
    • make all the other letters in black crayon.
  • Write the spelling words on a chalkboard.
  • Write three words that rhyme with or sound like each of the spelling words.
  • Draw a picture of each word with the written word underneath. Make a spelling picture book.
  • Paint your words on the driveway or sidewalk using water and a brush.
  • Divide each of the words into syllables.
  • Have a friend “write” the word on your back and try to guess what the word was.
  • Have a friend write the words with some missing letters. Guess the missing letters.
  • Sitting on the floor with a friend across from, roll a large ball back and forth. Each each time the ball is rolled call out the letters of a spelling word. EX. G (roll) O (roll) L (roll) D (roll) “GOLD!, This spells gold!”
  • Play basketball. Each time you shoot a basket, say a letter until you spelled a word.
  • Jump rope. Each time you jump, say a letter until you spelled a word.
  • Make a word using straws, cereal, or pasta.
  • Make two sets of flashcards using all of your words. Play Concentration. You only get to keep the pair if you can spell the word correctly. Otherwise you lose a turn.
  • On a cookie sheet, practice writing all of your words using shaving cream.
  • Using sidewalk chalk, write your words outside on concrete.
  • Say each letter while clapping your hands to the rhythm of a funky beat.
