Audience: "Who will be reading this?"
|
|
Young children can also be under the impression that we, the teachers, are
always the audience. They may think that we are the only people who will
ever read their writing and that there is one correct response. To break
these misconceptions, second grade students are asked to identify who will
read pieces of their writing. Will they write for themselves, the teacher, a
parent, children from another country, or a general audience? A writer's
audience influences language use, style, and format. Second graders will
have the opportunity to write to many audiences including the principal,
state and local government officials, their friends, and their parents.
Giving second graders a wide range of audiences embeds writing as an
authentic experience.
