Writing Developmental Stages

Children develop as they attempt writing tasks for a variety of purposes and audiences. Teachers are responsible for planning authentic activities and guiding instruction in a supportive classroom atmosphere. The First Steps Writing program identifies five phases of achievement in the developmental writing process: many adult writers are still working on skills in the proficient writing phase. Parents and teachers can work together to help students enhance writing skills and strategies as they move along the First Steps Continuum. Most second graders are in the experimental or early writing phase.
