Early Writing

Children write about topics which are personally significant. They are beginning to consider audience needs. They have a sense of sentence but may only be able to deal with one or two elements of writing at one time. Children are able to use familiar text forms. They experiment with language. They can use some punctuation and are beginning to talk with others about their writing.

Parent Tips

  • Praise your child’s writing efforts. Respond to the message in their writing rather than the grammar or spelling.
  • Have fun writing messages to each other. Write reminders and riddles.

  • Start a family diary to record special days or events.
  • Ask your child about the writing they are doing at school.
