Experimental Writing

Children are aware that speech can be written down and that written messages remain constant. They understand the left to right organization of print and experiment with writing letters and words. Children are able to use familiar forms of writing.

Parent Tips

  • Read to your child and encourage him or her to join in.
  • Talk about books before you read them and encourage your child to predict what might happen.
  • Take your child to the library to select own books.
  • Write messages to your child and encourage them to write replies. Talk about letters, words, and spaces as you write.
  • Use a family message board to trade messages.
  • Try written conversations with your child.
  • Support your child’s spelling attempts.
  • Provide a special place for your child to write.
  • Encourage your child to make cards for others.
  • Talk about the purposes for your writing: lists, messages, letters, etc.
  • Make scrapbooks and encourage your child to add captions to the pictures.
  • Draw attention to print forms on T.V., in telephone books, at stores, and on signs.
  • Play games with words using plastic or magnetic letters.
