Proficient Writing

Writers have developed a personal style of writing and are able to manipulate forms of writing to suit their purposes. They have control over spelling and punctuation. They choose from a large vocabulary and their writing is cohesive, coherent, and satisfying. Writers use topic sentences and include relevant information. Writers organize paragraphs logically to form a cohesive text. Writers plan and edit text successfully.

- Provide a quiet study area for your child.
- Be prepared to discuss writing tasks with your child.
- Encourage your child to continue to read and write for information and pleasure.
- Take your child to live theater performances.
- Discuss current events.
- Talk about mass media and their influence on society.
- Encourage your child to use writing to accomplish things.
- Encourage your child to use writing to express feelings.
- Play word games.
- Encourage your child to use a dictionary or thesaurus independently.
