Purpose: "Why am I writing?"
|

Many young students are unsure about the purpose of their writing. They may
feel that they are only writing "because the teacher said to". In second grade,
we carefully impart that the reason for writing each piece is unique and
important. We want kids to know that their ideas are very important to us
and to the world. Writing enables people to communicate thoughts, ideas and
feelings over distance and time. Second graders learn that the purpose of
their writing can be to entertain, retell events, give instructions, report
information, explain processes, argue or persuade, or share their innermost
selves. Throughout the year, we work together to examine the need for
writing and identify the purpose for each writing activity.
